Mistaking someone else for your girlfriend? You aren't alone

Since Korea perfected plastic surgery in 2018, more and more men report being unable to recognize their girlfriends in a crowd.

"The other day I ordered my coffee at Caffe Bene and I thought I saw my girlfriend drinking coffee with another guy. I got really mad and I approached the table and threw a complete temper tantrum. I tried dragging the girl outside by the wrist, as forcefully as I could. But, her boyfriend was pulling her other arm. Anyway, it wasn't until the girl showed me her ID that I realized my mistake. Thankfully the couple was really understanding and told me: 'don't worry, it happens all the time,'" said Park, a nineteen year old engineering student at Yonsei.

Longtime player, womanizer and successful jerk, Lee Seunghyun, lamented: "there is no point in going out clubbing to pick up a new woman every weekend. Do one, you've done them all. I feel like I've been in a long time relationship with one woman, a woman who doesn't remember me, who seems to hang out at all my usually spots... She's there in the office when I get to work. She makes my coffee at Starbucks... There's five or six of her in the same subway car as me in the morning... I don't even bother to tell women to get out of my apartment in the morning anymore. What's the point? I'll see her again a few minutes later anyway. What do I have to live for?"

Some in the government are recommending that more options be presented to women in plastic surgery clinics.

"We have 2 faces that we create for our customers. It's not up to us, its what they want," said Lee, a plastic surgeon in Apgujeong. He showed us his catalogue, and sure enough there were only two options.

Sociology Professor, Choi Eunsol, at Korea University, told us that she felt Korean entertainment companies should be doing their part to present young women with more ideas for their face.

"Your face is a canvas. The surgeons blade is a paint brush. There are so many possiblities. Just look at how different and interesting we all look when we are born? Our surgeons lack creativity. They need to find a way to replicate the same distinctiveness and endless possibilities that nature produces. I think we need more inspiration from our entertainment industry, they are full of original ideas," Mrs. Choi said.

One company is even cashing in on this problem. They are a startup called Not Mistaken Inc. and they are selling ankle bracelets that allow boyfriends not only to know their girlfriend's location at all times, but verify that the person they are having dinner with is indeed their actual girlfriend.

"We are even seeing massive sales in South East Asia and China because men there are having the same issues as Korea men. This has been the case ever since the majority of tourism to our country was for plastic surgery," CEO Kang Jaemin claimed. Their IPO is next week and they expect to raise 20,000,000,000won.

I guess there are drawbacks to a society full of beautiful women with big eyes and small faces.
