I've read about some new recruits to Korea being offered only a one way flight. Is it true? Do folks actually accept it or stick to their guns and demand a round trip flight and work with other recruiters instead?
Hopefully, if this is true, you all stick up for yourself and don't accept that BS, especially if it's an ASAP offer and you got all your documents together. Also, I hope you don't accept a verbal promise but get it in writing into the contract before accepting. |

Yup, it's true. It's everywhere! For every dozen jobs I looked at maybe one offered roundtrip. I had recruiters who wouldn't even try to approach the topic with potential employers. Also, if people are looking early enough, schools will just move on because they have time to find a sucker somewhere who will take it.
I'm a huge brat, and I wouldn't take any entry airfare that wasn't paid upfront too. |

Did you get a round trip ticket then? I mean stuck to your guns? I'm thinking if I'm in that situation, I'd prob not bring it up until the actual manager or academy owner spoke to me on the phoen and then ask them what "one way" means and then tell them I want "round trip" and not budge.
I'm just curious if there are actually stupid people accepting this one way flight BS? I mean if we collectively refused, they'd have to cave. |

This is true of all the negative situations for teachers here. But alas, for every one teacher that sticks to their guns, there are 20 that either don't know better or are too timid to fight for their rights.
The airfare issue is more than 2 years old. I remember it becoming an issue in March of 2013, and by September of that year it had become standard.
Most of the new teachers are using Facebook as their information resource, which is not a very good place to find info about what makes for a good contract. Because of this, many newbs are taking shit jobs and crying about it after the fact on Facebook. |

Really? I had heard about the hakwons trying it but it not sticking? In other words, I'v only heard about them trying to do this now.
As for taking it, I guess there must be a lot of stupid people out there. Guess it will be time to move on to China. Eff that if I were in that situation!! |

How about we start knocking newbie teachers around who lower the bar? |

It's an impossible situation because there are too many graduates who just come over here because they think "well it's a job" or ones who just come over for the life of living abroad. These people will just jump at the opportunity and accept anything almost. China isn't much better either, I know two BA holders with TEFL certifications working for $700 a month + free accommodation in a large city.
Not the norm but when you have people start to accept these things it will slowly become the norm. Think the only way you will be able to avoid it soon is to get better qualified, and teaching experience in schools back home. Sucks for everyone else though and these people don't know they are selling themselves short or simply don't care. |

Around? Surely you mean "off," right? Short of eliminating recruiters or their ability to source a steady supply of warm bodies, the bottom will continue coming upward. Maybe travel expenses and free housing will disappear entirely. Or continue to be offered, but in lieu of salary only a stipend for living expenses will be provided, as jobs transform into unpaid volunteer positions. Or hagwons get nationalized, turned into state run day care centers, and international staffing will cease altogether. |

I don't think Korea is popular enough for people to be paying their own way without compensation. We won't see that until several years into the future. That's the main reason I couldn't teach in Japan. I couldn't afford the plane ticket, the set up costs for an apartment, and not getting paid for 1 month. I would have needed at least 5,000 dollars to 10,000 dollars saved up to make a fresh start there. |

I had a recruiter tell me the other day that the "Academy Union" had decided not to provide airfare to Korea anymore.
I told him that plenty of schools advertise one way or even roundtrip airfare, and he said that "if you apply for those jobs which provide round trip tickets ,then you would know that many of them provide one way which when you are going back."
Wow....
Many positions I see seem to be offering one way airfare only at the end of the contract, but I would prefer to have a prepaid ticket TO Korea, if I only got one, you know? |

Ha ha. That's funny. Recruiters really will say anything to make a sale. I feel sorry for the new applicants that don't know that things like an "Academy Union" are completely made up delusions of an idiot recruiter trying to dupe some poor schmuck.
In related news, I heard that the super boss of the Hagwon Super Friends club decided that all new employees must pay for their own apartments. Sucks, but it is what it is, ya know? |

The hope is to hire someone already in country, so the only lure necessary is a paid-for exit strategy. |

What do you mean, he will give them the money for the rent instead of paying it himself? |

As a hagwon owner, I can tell you that there is an academy owners organization, but I couldn't tell you how much power they wield. I can say that we meet a few times a year and discuss industry standards. the one way plane ticket is/will be the industry standard. |

At some point everyone just needs to say no to esl korea. All in all it is just the worst game in town. Accepting a position at a hogwon is is insanity. Ss happy the won is going to fall .
Anything to drive a steak into the heart of that horrible industry. Lipstick on a pig continues to be the rule when it comes to esl korea. |
