| Why do you want to stop polygamy? I thought everyone against same sex unions was for polygamous unions. The bible is clearly against one and pro the other. |

Well, to start with, my objection to polygamy is not biblical. But, nice point scored there against those with biblical objections to same sex unions.
I do not believe that anyone has a right to two wives, two husbands, a husband and a wife, etc. Furthermore, I do not see any benefit to state sanction of such a polygamous union. Lastly, I would not want to see tax breaks extended to polygamous trios or groups. |

| If women have the potential to dominate or just outright enslave men, then polyamory and polyandry will become more prevalent instead. Given the distinct shortage of females in China, they might lead the way there. It will be unsurprising to me if a few women start taking ownership of small to large man-fleets in the upcoming generation. |

How is this different from an individual's right to a single spouse?

What was the state benefit to legitimizing same-sex marriages rather than same-sex civil unions, such that a similar benefit could not be gained by legitimizing polygamous marriages?

From what I've seen of Mormon polygamy, at least, this would have little actual effect: the additional wives tend not to have their own sources of income, and the patriarch could still declare any number of his children as dependents for the purposes of tax deductions. If anything, would recognizing the entirety of these families not make it easier to identify and control welfare fraud in their communities? Furthermore, would not the same arguments against scaring illegal immigrants away from police and other protective government services apply to the extra-legal wives and children? |

Castrated goat! Ha! That is funny. Good one. Anyway, I have to agree with CentralCali on this one. Some FLDS are, but mainline LDS are not. |

I didn't say that all Mormons are polygamists. Of those people who are both Mormon and engage in polygamy, welfare fraud is more common than not, and state-recognition of their marriages could help address this.
How polygamy affects your wallet
| Quote: |
Polygamists have multiple wives and dozens of children, but the state only recognizes one marriage. That leaves the rest of the wives to claim themselves as single moms with armies of children to support. Doing that means they can apply for welfare, which they do. And it's all legal.
"More than 65 percent of the people are on welfare ... compared with 6 percent of the people of the general population," Shurtleff said. |
