Nope. Five total years in Korea, and never. But, I did have kidney stones once and they thought I'd been drinking because I felt like bleep, could barely function and was throwing up. If you ever ahd kidney stones, you know how painful it can be...
I finally went home, drank a ton of water, laid down on the hot ondol-heated floor and fell asleep. Woke up and the pain was gone, went back and finished the day.
Cracked me up. To this day they still think I was hungover. |

Perhaps a more revealing post would have been "Working with a hangover"
???
If you have not done so, god bless you. |

I think it's par for the course to miss work due to drinking in Korea, and if not it should be. It's a commendable feat. |

I used to enjoy reading the various posts of those posters way back then.
Now they're all gone.
This board is dead!
Just digging up all these past posts is like trying to resuscitate a cadaver.
The total demise of this board is now reality. |

Death by mods.
Don't mourn though, have a drink. Preferably before work. |

Having the courage to be carefree enough to miss work on occasion is something to be respected more than the "manliness" of suffering all day so your boss likes you. |
This gem came from page two. Too funny! |

Why not! I'll respond to a 10 year old thread.
In 5 years I have worked through some of the harshest hangovers possible. Only once did I not make it in the next day. My boss was out of town and at the time I worked at a school that taking a sick day once in a while was semi-ok. So yes! Once in Korea.
Ive also taken two sick days to interview for jobs. Both were during my last week or so. I got both jobs. Both times I went to the doctor and got a prescription for my "severe migraine" and showed a copy of the presription to my boss as proof. The first time I did it my boss actually sent his daughter to "check on me" while I was out. He was suspicious but I talked my way out of it.
Once I got really bad laryngitis and couldnt speak. Took a day for that as well.
5 years in Korea. 4 sick days. 2 to interview for a job. Once because I over did it on a night out. Once because I was legitimatly sick.
Think thats bad? |

Never because of drinking. Oversleeping? A couple times.
I found that people won't keep pouring soju into your glass if you put sprite in it and leave it there. But then again, I eventually found another way: accept the glass, LEAVE IT THERE. I'll grab the nearest empty glass and give them the serving. If the bujang or isa or whatever doesn't like it? Too bad.
They're not the ones nursing my hangover in the morning.
Oh, one more thing that works is to just get up and walk out for some air....for about three hours. They'll be too drunk to notice you haven't chugged down any soju by the time you're back. |

I've found that telling people "I do not drink alcohol" works very well.

This. Once again, as is often the case elsewhere, I find the pronouncements and assessments of CentralCali to be accurate and practical. Additionally, enlightening and entertaining. Likewise, I have done the same, only with this variation: "I have an ulcer. My doctor told me not to drink alcohol or eat spicy food." Done. Then, after a decent interval, I excuse myself and leave, often going elsewhere to eat and drink what I want, and with whom I want. |
