The U.S. government from Jan. 1, 2016, will be able to deny new passports or revoke ones held by people with serious tax debts

IRS doesn't give a damn about English teachers. Most make barely 25,000 per year...and those others that are rising in the ranks may approach making more, but in the US anything less than 36,000 USD is low income. (In short, the vast majority are not worthy of government time to pursue)

In short, does the term "small fry" mean anything to you? We are talking about "SERIOUS" tax debts here...LOL

Nice scare tactic though.

Don't think so.
Don't forget about FBAR every year.
FATCA is for the rich.

Last year the IRS said I owed them 7,000 bucks,
because I made the mistake of exempting my foreign wife.
I had to do the form again and they figured out I owed nothing.

You can thank Obama for all of this.

Senator Barbara Boxer is a pathetic, unreasonable, uncontrolled, impulsive and irascible old woman. Californians are suckers for some reason like millions of others who keep idiots in office and re-elect them.
All these laws enacted that most don't care for are the fault of the voters for electing boneheads.
The IRS...fault of the voters/elected officials for letting them get out of hand.
The IRS does not usually go after large amounts of taxes owed..they go after the low income folks who don't have the money to hire lawyers and fight them.
And don't forget...BONUSES ARE paid to IRS agents who collect money! That's a fact! I know....My brother is a slimy IRS agent...and I tell it to his face.

This may be the only "but for" Obama result I've seen complained of yet.

Is paying your taxes hard, guys? The income exclusion is beyond $88,000 per citizen now. If you're having problems owing U.S. taxes, well . . . you really have a spending problem more than anything.

I guess if they want my passport, they can have it. I have a Korean passport anyway. Cool

I am closing in on retirement within the next few years and they will have to send my SSI benefits here to South Korea, so I don't think I am in serious jeopardy in any case.

There is a form linked above to avoid the consequnces of this situation that would be very applicable to most English teachers here.

But Obama and Boxer will give you free birth control. So, everyone will vote for them and ignore the other 99% of stuff that is bad. Lots of dumb and very blind people out there.

A few years ago, the IRS said I owed them over $20,000, and by the time it got sorted out, they mailed me a check for around $850. The IRS definitely goes after small timers.
