Do you mean as in books, etc for general sale by the big publishers?
(good luck unless you have something dramatic to offer).
or
Do you mean as in papers presented at conferences?

I published a book on idiomatic expressions MANY moons ago with a K buddy. Wasn't with a big publisher, but it made it into the bookstores. Was professionally recorded and had two cassette tapes as well, which should tell you just how long ago that was lol. Think I made a whopping 5 million off of it, but truth be told it wasn't much of an effort to put together.
Used to be a lot easier. Several hagwon chains produced and published their own text book series, for example, though they were seldom done by people with any related background and were widely acknowledged to be crap.
Up until the financial crisis, there were a ton a small to medium size publishing companies chucking money at anything that even remotely looked like it might have legs. I sold the same children's book twice; one company bought it, went belly up, and just gave it back, and the second company bought it, but never took it to print. Got the rights back over a few beers. Still sitting in a drawer somewhere.
A lot of Koreans were making bank back then selling test prep books that were largely pilfered. I remember Korean 'authors' and publishing company employees going to Tokyo to buy all the latest test prep bibles. Then they'd get back to Seoul and start 'creating' their own books. |

You could go to any major bookstore and look over the top selling domestically produced ESL related books, take note of the publishers, and work from there.
They'll more than likely want to see a finished product that, if they're interested, they could roll out fairly soon. A 3 book series would bring you more clout.
Your credentials will matter, too, so if you have teaching experience at a big name school or university, related degrees (BA and MA) from big name schools, or any experience that has given you some public exposure, that'll help.
Themeerkatlover has more contemporary experience, though, so go with what he/she has to offer in terms of advice. |
