Can you even get a university job with a CELTA?
My hagwon are choosy who they choose as they go on quality instruction. Students pay good money for instruction at Hagwons so they deserve good quality instruction. If you can't be bothered to create good quality , stimulating lessons, go work for Berlitz instead then. |
Generally Korean university ESL departments do not care at all about how a teacher/lecturer/professor performs in the class room. The fact that they don't require any practical teaching qualifications at all for their positions, or do any quality control observations, is testament to this. |
It is more complicated than that. |
Obviously not at unigwont's university

Kid you not.... In the end, all my Korean bosses could talk about was how much this person we hired resembles (in their eyes) a previous coworker who did a good job. |

i idont doubt it. Big famous schools are different. Go try and talk to someone at kyunghee or sookmyung or Ehwha university and ask them if they have a nice time of it. |

At a big famous school the higher ups want
- you to be blonde
- popular
-and to pay you as little as possible.
The mid level management wants:
- you to give a lot of writing assignments ,
- red pen them all as much as possible
-be on campus at least 8 hours a day ,
- for you not to do any work outside the university
- to make up classes that were lost to red days.
- And most of all for you to know your place

It is more complicated than that. In the chain of command different people demand different things or prefer differnt things many of which are at odds with each other. But you are responsible to them all.
You accurately describe the higher ups. Mid level management is a different story alltogether. They are sanctimonious as hell and will cut you down for any mistake you make or they feel you made.. It makes them feel good about themselves to put foreign instructors in their place.
Working for a big famous school is not a cush job. They will work you unti you are sick |
Not necessarily true^
Things at my school have been a cake walk. Still loving it. |

You are making things up. |

Things change. & you don't work at a top school. It might even get closed down soon.
It is the dawn of the era of the two hour class.
Seoul National and Hong Ik are the norm and the typical case.
By the way you have never even once commented on what happens at those schools. |

FYI -- Flip-flops had a Delta, if memory serves, and was a teacher-trainer.
I felt sorry for the guy, because he was my favorite candidate. We are male-heavy, at the moment, though. That, and as mentioned, one of the female candidates made fewer mistakes, and happened to resemble a previous coworker who was beloved. She also knew someone on staff. If she had not been the one to make fewer mistakes, it would have made for a very interesting debate. I made it known that I am not a fan of hiring friends of coworkers, becaue cliques develop, which has caused past issues among foreign staff -- getting sneaky with trading hours, manipulating things, etc.
We had an attractive blonde (on 8cm stilletos, no less) interview, as well. She was highly intelligent, and would have done an excellent job. She spoke multiple languages, actually. There were fears she would bolt within a year, as she was an on-the-go person who hadn't stayed anywhere for terribly long. Sadly, she also lacked focus in her interview. These reasons, and the fact that the other female made fewer mistakes, sunk her. Some other school will snatch her up, and she will be happy.
One of my favorite questions to ask was, "So, how do you like working splits?"
You could see their faces drop. |

I suppose it's possible flip flops had a medical condition (fungal feet etc) that meant he couldn't wear socks and shoes in hot weather. (you didn't mention anything else he did wrong) Also I would guesstimate all universities in Korea are male heavy and even if it was a special case, denying someone a job on the basis of what genitals they were born with is just wrong.
It's very easy to find out who the best candidate is in teaching terms if you have a clear idea of what you want them to do in the classroom. Get them to describe a recent lesson that went well, how they deal with certain issues in the class room etc...From what I've heard, however, none of this is very important to university hiring bods who therefore end up resorting to methods from the 1970s that are just embarrassingly amateur . |

He told us why. He said he was out the door and to public transportation before he noticed. My guess, however, is that he just forgot to bring them. He had requested to be the final interview, and was coming from a class. I bet he just forgot them, and was embarrassed to say that. I don't know why. That would have sounded better,
I have had fungal feet, and could have worn shoes for a 30 min interview.
And yes, I agree that hiring to fill racial, or gender quotas, is wrong. |
