I'm looking into this right now. I've lived in super-rural England, and in London and NYC, and a mid-sized English city.

I'd like to live in a traditional smallish village/town, surrounded by nature (mountains, forests, rivers, beaches, all that jazz), peace and quiet, darkness at night (I miss the stars!)... But still be able to reach civilisation without too much hassle (ideally at least a mid-sized city, ~300k+).

In rural England where I lived there was no public transport, so unless you drove you were stuck. And that sucked, as you couldn't drink/party etc. However, if you did drive, you weren't too far from a big city.

Is this the same in Korea? I hear the bus system is pretty decent. An hour on a bus isn't bad, as long as the schedule is superb (or at least satisfactory) and the destination in decent. But I hear some places are so remote, and the "cities" so small, that you'd have to be on a bus for roughly three weeks to get near to a decent sized city (OK, maybe three hours).

The provinces I'm mainly looking at at Chungcheongnamdo (not too bad), Gyeongsangnamdo (some more rural areas) and Jeollanamdo (basically a big field).

Any advice is appreciated! Smile

I've lived in rural areas in Korea and Japan. Korea is so small and well-connected that you're never far from a city of some kind... probably an hour at most.

Check out this map:

I taught in rural Chungnam. Some of the teachers hated it, others liked it. I personally liked it, you have to remember that there's buses to Seoul early Saturdays and Sundays and they don't take that long to reach Seoul. Chungnum is 90% Christian and the Koreans are a lot nicer there in general. As opposed to other areas that are 75% Pagan and 25% Christian. Also I'm not particularly Christian, I'm an Agnostic/Deist. I always told them I was a Christian, it's probably a good idea in those areas.

One of my friends was the ONLY foreigner in this small city. He wrote about it, and how he dealt with it for a year. You should talk to him for an expert's word, if you want. He always answers comments on his story.

Watch the Korean movie "My Teacher, Mr. Kim". Good movie about a Korean teacher who's banished from Seoul to the boonies for bribery (or something like that, it's been 13 years since I watched it).

This is simple OP

1) Do you like to party / nightlife regularly (conventional Western style)?

2) Do you like to sleep around with many sloots (if your a guy)?

or

3) Homebody or outdoorsy type who doesnt party?

4) Don't date and sleep around a lot or seek one person for a relationship?

If you are in the first category then go to a major city. Preferably Seoul, Daegu, or Busan.

If you are in the second category then you could make it in a rural setting.

Not so fast my friend- what if you're #2 AND #3? How about then?
