The longstanding, reputable, bricks and mortar University of Auckland now offers a Master's in TESOL via distance mode.

One of the courses is with the renowned ESL author Rod Ellis, a prof. at the university.

Looks like a good way to go: the university isn't known to churn out hundreds or thousands of distance grads each year, and their entrance standards are higher than many of the Aussie programs.

Any university with top professors in the field is the way to go, IMO.

I'm tempted,... but the total cost will be around $ 15,000, so I'm heeming and humming.

Do it over 2 years...$7500 a year is peanuts. Some people spend that on beer. Smile

Mind you I am not a thrifty person.

i want to do a distance MA, but i'm not as interested in AppLing as General Linguistics & History of English. any recommendations? all i've found so far is Nottingham.

Why not just save some money and go back to your country while taking a sort of sabbatical from your life here in Korea.

Next year I'll continue summer study for 2 months in a MAT program on a campus of a large US state university, 9 credit hours@$150/hr. Add on living expenses and books. I have 33 credits left which will take 3 semesters, 2 of which are student teaching in a school. That's quite a bargain vs. an online degree where you are basically paying international student fees.

As a full time grad student a few semesters ago, I was able to get an internship teaching in an on-campus uni ESL program 2 hours per day. I got a tuition waiver plus a stipend at roughly $20/hour, about $700/mo. on top to use for living expenses.

I'm not sure how valid MAT's are considered here in Korea while lookig for teaching jobs at universities but w/ the US's 'No Child' policy, this will look good if I someday want to pursue teaching in my country.

i'm interested in this so like seeing all the posts.

what about an online diploma in becoming an online esl teacher from a uni in london? it's about 500 pounds and seems it wouldn't take long to finish. a bonus is you are allowed access to some online resources including a network of online teachers. good idea?

Sorry if this is a redundant question. Been going through the search function.

Anyway I'm bit older (40 years old to be exact) and looking for a break from working and living in the states. I do have a college degree and clean back ground.

I'm thinking about getting the 120 hours TESOL certificate but there is a MA TESOL offered at one of the local colleges. So which would be better or does not make a difference starting out?

I hear stories of the hiring practice as being well discriminatory in nature sometimes so I'm thinking how can I better my chances in finding work in South Korea.

Should I go for MA or wait later on and just test the water with the regular TESOL certificate? And why not just study to be a teacher and go to teacher college(which is 2 years here in USA) and be certified as a teacher instead of MA in TESOL?

I hope you understand my question.
