Great input! And, true, the ME is not one country. I was just going off of input from friends who have worked in several, and from what I've gleaned from other academics who have worked there.
In my defense, I did state, "Guess you could scoot over to the international board for better first hand accounts. All I know is that everyone I know who has worked over there has been pretty happy to get back to Seoul."
Enjoy! |

Still waiting.
I got rejected by Kyonggi and SNU in the first round. At least they let me know, which i appreciate.
I got to a second interview with Woosong. After a really short skype interview loaded with technical problems (probably on their end) and a bunch of last minute time changes I got rejected there too.
Ive sent applications both in Korea and abroad so hopefully I will hear something soon, but its not looking good at the moment.
I get the feeling MA Tesols are a dime a dozen these days. |

MA Tesols were a dime a dozen in the early 1990's if not sooner. |

Sometimes it just takes time and persistence. I got rejected by the uni where I work now the first time I applied.....a short time latwr they had another ad up. I applied again and got offered a job by the uni president then and there....signed the same day.
It happens. Dont give up. Plus I know some profs who have worked at Woosong....they might have done you a favour by not hiring you. Keep at it all man, chin up and keep applying its not over till the fat Dalek sings. |

Thanks, I'm definitely not going to just give up, but I feel like I need a backup plan just in case. Also, working on something helps me deal with the anxiety of waiting. |

Woosong turned you down? Hate to say this but they used to take pretty much anybody with an MA in anything (heck in my day they would take BA's with experience), they have one of the highest turnover rates of any university in Korea. They also have a crap reputation. 20 years ago when I was there (and had to do a midnight run when the currency hit 2000/dollar) it wasn't the greatest. Just talked to guy here in China who just came from there and he said pretty much nothing changed as we were comparing notes.
only thought I had regarding them is maybe they thought you were overqualified or too smart that you will figure out what a crap place it is to work at |

I thought it was really strange because I passed the first interview which had all the teaching and typical interview questions. I felt like I nailed that one.
The second interview was weird, because of the technical problems and also they only asked me how much Korean I know (I'm guessing they want a translator for admin), my visa type, and my work history.
The only reasons I can figure is that either 1) I have an F-4 visa, but don't know Korean, 2) my work history, while having a lot of adult and college-aged student experience, does not have much specifically university experience, or 3) I'm astonishingly un-likeable which I don't think is the case, as I haven't had trouble before, but who knows. |

Ahhhhhh.......many unis are VERY pedanticabout the two years formal experienceat a uni or college blablabla.....
I got in by a miracle with two years public school experience partly because the president liked me.....I am a very likable fellow....anyway......that may be the problem if all other requirements have been satisfied. You are in Korea though right? I heard they often want people to help with 'administration'.....so maybe they want someone with el Koreano lingo......as I said they probably did you a favour......
Ps=typing on a phone is hard work.... |

From what you've written, you haven't stated where your degree is from.
You also don't have the required experience.
The latter fact alone can disqualify you from the position. |

Well, if you are writing about Woosong, maybe you are right, but if that's the case I felt like I shouldn't have made it as far as I did. I never lied or misled them in any way on my resume. It was all there. It would just be strange that it took a second interview for them to figure out my qualifications didn't match what they were looking for.
I went to a state university in the US. |

Pretty sure they don't treat gyopos as well as the "whities" there. Do they actually pay F-4 holders less? That. I am unsure. Maybe they wanted to ask you more questions about your citizenship because they wanted to verify that your English was actually native, or near so? Maybe they wanted to change your contract, to give you inferior contract conditions, and figure out your Korean ability before trying to do so? Who knows? |

A lot of Unis want F visa holders to save them the time, effort and money in trying to obtain a visa for a new prof.....there is a mission but we don't know what it is....each Uni is different. Easier with an F visa but not impossible without..... |
