I was in SK 2007-2014.

Was never concerned.

Long timers:

Is this as bad as it has ever been?

If you're talking about the newspaper headlines then yes, I'd say they're more frequent and more scaremongering than they've ever been before. if you're asking about the actual threat of war, I have no idea.

I remember living close to a base in 1997 and talking with some military personnel who thought they were going over the DMZ (this was sometime after). Apparently Clinton did have some kind of contingency plans, but it just wasn't splashed in the media the way it is now. Clinton's actual plans ended being to give NK the nuclear fuel rods they wanted and in turn NK promised to use them only for energy purposes, not for development of weapons.

The biggest difference is that the U.S. now has a guy like Trump as "Commander-in-Chief" ... http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/353359-trump-undermines-tillerson-with-north-korea-comments

I think the main idea is to convince China that there is a credible threat of war so that they would be pressured to greatly reduce their support for North Korea, but it's a dangerous strategy with someone like Trump in charge ... https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/the-case-for-brinksmanship-with-north-korea/2017/10/06/f8f93da8-a958-11e7-b3aa-c0e2e1d41e38_story.html

Has diplomacy worked before for North Korea. Remember the fuel rods that North Korea said they would use only for peaceful purposes? You can forget diplomacy. That's just something that keeps getting passed around and keeps evil fat Kim smiling with his psychopathic smile, because it appears to be working for him.

Trump has bullied his way to the top in the U.S. (with lots of help from Russian operatives) but he may not be able to successfully bully the "supreme leader of North Korea" with threats; and the big danger is that NK will unleash as many deadly weapons as they can if/when they learn (through their many spies and hackers) that a planned attack on them is imminent...

The escalation of verbal threats by both Trump and Kim Jong-un has increased the danger of a major war breaking out. I don't think Kim will ever agree to give up all of NK's nuclear weapons, so diplomatically the U.S. would have to make some concession based on containment, rewarding the freezing of further development. In terms of the human costs involved, I think that would be much better than starting a war to try to completely wipe out their nuclear program.

This article is hardly comforting ... http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/10/north-korea-nuclear-war-break-moment-171017034147416.html

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2017/11/01/south-koreans-plan-welcome-war-lunatic-trump-mass-protest-demands-peace

Quote:
The protesters plan to "call on the U.S. to stop threatening to start a war, putting pressure on the North, and forcing the South to buy American-made weapons," the Korea Herald reports, noting:

They also want the withdrawal of the US Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense anti-missile system, which they say caters only to U.S. interests while widening the divide between South Korea and China. China, which believes the system's radar could be used to spy on its territory, has taken what appear to be retaliatory actions against Korea, such as restrictions on Korean firms' businesses in China.

They also want the abolishment of the Korea-U.S. bilateral trade deal, which the two countries have recently begun to renegotiate at Trump's urging, saying the trade deal only benefits the U.S. and disadvantages Korea, especially local farmers.

North Korean newspaper and television reports, according to Deutsche Welle, have highlighted the planned protests against "war maniac Trump's South Korea visit" and noted that the protesters have "denounced war lunatic Trump's hysteria for a nuclear war against the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea]."

As bad as Trump is, he does not fully represent the U.S.A. and , in my opinion, he was not legitimately elected considering Russia's interference with the election. On the other hand, North Korea is basically a criminal state hell bent on re-uniting the peninsula under its corrupt demonic leadership.

South Korea, largely built up with the help of U.S. money, has been protected by the U.S. since the Korean War. Protests aimed at Trump's outrageous statements against using diplomacy are reasonable, but protests aimed at ridding South Korea of American influence/miltary support - at least at this point - would play into North Korea's vision for a united Korea...

Although peace much better than war, sometimes war is necessary (so prepare accordingly...)

Totally disagree with you, Rteacher.

War is NOT the answer.

Has it ever been as bad as this?

Yes, and always will be.

That's the common theme.

Just make sure you're registered with the U.S. embassy, that's the best I can say. After having lived there for so long, the greatest fears were anti-Americanism. I'd been there when Seoul had a 100,000 people march on the U.S. Embassy (Two teenage girls on their way to a birthday party were run over by a Hummer in Seoul by U.S. soldiers doing drills. The U.S. soldiers were acquitted).

Yet picture your average Korean confrontation, some you may've witnessed on the streets, such as pushing and shoving and yelling and screaming. A lot is bluffing, saving face. This is the common theme's intent, which is to make you run.

I was also there for those anti-U.S. protests, and I got annoyed when they persisted for months... I recall yelling at protesters that came onto a subway car that it was time to get over those two accidental deaths (though there was no doubt some negligence involved) and consider protesting all the deaths caused by drunk drivers ...

Anyway, I'm afraid the chances for an actual war with North Korea breaking out have dramatically increased after today's NK missile test ...

Both Trump and Kim Jong un are pushing their countries closer to war, and it's gotten so bad that Senator Lindsay Graham has stated that it's time to start moving the families of American military personnel out of South Korea. Personally, if I were still working/living there I'd be making travel plans ... https://www.yahoo.com/news/gop-senator-time-military-families-leave-skorea-184304019--politics.html[/code]

(I just noticed that the poster above me just linked to the same article a couple hours ago ...)
