Back in 2005, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea found the old 호주 (hoju) system to be unconstitutional, and the legislature created a "personal registry" system which went into effect on 1 January 2008.
So, the big questions are:
- How does it work?
- Who can report entries (marriage, birth, etc.)?
- Under the hoju system, one would get a certified copy of it; now, what does one get if one needs a certified copy of, say, a marriage certificate?
- Who has access to the personal registry? (Who, besides the person whose registry it is can view the information on the personal registry?)
