They can go but the problem is that they need a visa to visit Japan. Most of the other countries like USA, Canada, NZ, Australia, UK do not need it. That's why South Africans will have a very hard time to do the visa run.

As a South African it is basically impossible to do a visa run to Japan. The Japanese embassy in Seoul requires you to provide your ARC and a letter of reference from your school. Obviously since you don't have the E-2 Visa yet, you don't have an ARC card. I had the same problem so I had to do my Visa run to Hong Kong.

I don't know what you're talkin about. My friend from Johannasberg just came back from her run to Japan, we met up in Osaka in fact. All she had to do was go to the Japanese Embassy in Seoul and get a visa to go.

Simple. And she went. And she's back. So, no, it's far from impossible. This is her second time.

Yeah my friends are confused because they have heard that it was impossible to go but that other SA's have done it.

Well that is news to me. I was told by the Embassy in Seoul that it was impossible due to me not having a Korean work visa. Even Koreans have to provide their ID cards and a letter of reference from their employers. I guess it's to make sure you'll come back and not bum-around in Japan. All I can suggest is getting a Korean friend to contact the embassy directly.
