What would you do?

I'm a manger for a school now, and one of my jobs is to hire teachers.
A guy interviewed a few weeks ago and did alright. His resume looked good and he stated he had a 1580 SAT and was a member of mensa (sp). Well I needed someone to headup my SAT section and thought of him, based on his info and past work experience. Being that I actually do my job I started to check him out before I called. What I found is that his 'degree' is from a degree mill in Californa. 15 days no wait no fuss. So I ask again.

What would you do?

I guess I'll take the plunge with this question.

I picked report him to immigration. If he actually got a 1580 on his SATs, he should have been smart and when to college like the rest of us. I don't think you owe him any loyalty and in some ways, he was trying to play you for a fool.

I don't like when people do that.

I wouldn't report him to immigration and I wouldn't hire him.

I'd call him in for a second interview telling him he's almost assured to have the job. Then start asking him questions about his university and university life. Let him strangle himself in lies. Man, that sounds like fun. Can I be there?

I'm not suggesting for a second that you do hire this guy as the chances of the scenario that I'm about to lay out are virtually nill. But what difference does having a degree actually make? Say this guy in fact did score 1580 or whatever on his sats and is a member of MENSA (a reason not to employ him in itself) and you thought he really was the best person for the job would having spent 3-4 years turning up to a college make him any better of a teacher?? I'm pretty confident I could do my job just as well if I'd been doing something else for the three years I spent at university. It always strikes me as remarkable the arrogance of those who have a qualification and look down on anyone who doesn't have a comparable one. Having a degree doesn't make you any better it allows you to prove to others tht you have the skills you say you do and even then that is dubious. At the end of the day what good would 4 years spent studying maths with fishery management for you if you are going to teach English. At the end of the day my degree comes from a degree mill in London. 3 years, lots of wait, lots of fuss. So I ask again what actual good is your degree.....

P.S. Phone him up and grill him about his college days, in fact if you give me his number I'll happily do it for you just for laughs.....

Its a bare minimum to ask for a degree really. It does not manner if he is a genius or a dud.

How could we justify not hiring on the grounds of not having a degree in some nonsense subjust that has nowt to do with teaching?

Now - maybe you could get in trouble if he was caught out by immigration. And indeed when you apply for his visa you might do - so probably best not to hire - and tell him why if that is the reason...

I would drop him an e-mail telling him the reason you are not hiring him is that he lied about his degree.

It is up to other managers to do their homework, too.

If he were doing something that was harmful or dangerous to other people, then I'd inform Immigration. Since he is only cheating, I wouldn't take it as my responsibility. After all, most of the people here have no background or training that prepares them for teaching either. He's just a step less qualified. Not a crime worthy of deportation, in my book. But you have an obligation to your employer to follow the rules.

I would tell him to leave the country. Tell him you have ways to find out if he does not leave. Tell him that if he stays, he will be reported to immigration, fined, and jailed.

You need to be tough on him because if he is hired by another school, he will devalue the quality of teachers in Korea. He would only be hurting all of us. Sure, people could argue he is qualified because he speaks English. However, somone who lies that blatently, does not deserve a job. He's probably just here to get a job and a lot of privates.

He lied to you about the degree, how do you know that his other qualifications aren't bogus as well.

Maybe he's a fine person, and let's say he actually is a 'genius', he didn't take the time to complete a degree, which is a lot of work, like the majority of teachers here have. Side-stepping the rules and cutting corners is not really a good character trait if you ask me.

Don't give him them job at the very least.
