For Buddhas birthday i went to see the lantern show at the Beomosa temple in Busan.

It was an awesome sight and something that will stick in my memory for a long time to come.

What other posters were out and about at the temples today????

Went to Gakwonsa in Cheonan. It has (I think) the largest sitting bronze Buddha in Korea. Pretty cool.

At the weekend I went down south to Yeosu and watched the sunrise at Hyangilam, a hermitage built into the side of a cliff. There was some Buddha's b'day stuff going on there as well. Excellent.

I think there should be a permanent Korean travel thread ...

Check out Pomosa on a weekday on a day after a rain (when you get there you'll know why). Maybe the nicest place in Korea. I stopped going there on Buddha's B-day because it was too commercial. People driving their god damn cars all over the temple and hocking all that cheap crap all over the place. But on weekdays, when it's almost empty, pure peacefulness.

I think the problem is nobody on this forum really travels much besides it appears you and I, besides going to Seoul and Busan.

I had been there twice before and walked all along the fortress wall a couple of years ago and down into the temple. Some great scenery and we rolled up at 6 o'clock at night and it was deserted and they had the gongs going and the monks were chanting. A golden moment.

I know what you mean by it being too commercial but i just try to remember it as being their big birthday party, one day out of 365 where they make some money. However, all the cars did bother me. My friend and I were yelling at all the drivers to get out and walk or use public transportation. Not the oldies or the families with little ones, just ones that are too lazy to be bothered. We were walking faster than the cars in some spots.

I went fishing but I drove by many temples on the way. And I was caught in traffic on what is a normally quiet country road.

I first went to Beomosa temple in the fall of 2002 when I was in Pusan for the opening cerimonies for the Asian games. It was amazing. I met two very friendly guides there that took me on a tour of the place. Got some lovely pictures of the buildings and flowers there. When my mom came to Korea to visit this last march I took her down to Pusan and to Boemosa again. It still had such a lasting impression on me that I remembered most of what I learned the first time, and ended up giving my mom and two other American's a tour of the place. Highly recomend it to anyone that goes down to Pusan.

As for Buddah's birthday, I went to Insadong again to enjoy the street fair and parade. I found that by chance my first year here(had only been here a few months and just happened to go to Insadong on that weekend). Always fun.
