I've been offered a pretty good gig in Miryang, decent hours I mean. My only concern is I know Miryang is a small city and I can't seem to find much about it anwhere, including here (only two hits from a search, one sez "its a good place to learn Korean since there ain't nothing else to do". I am a newbie and still in the states. Will I have any sort of social life there (friends, dating, etc) or will I have to get all that in Busan (40 min by train)?
Thanks

Well, its a small town and you may have to travel to find what you want. Smaller town afford more of a chance to see country life, but you may long for the comforts of home only found in bigger cities.
I tried to guess what the city is in Korean, but a search came up with nothing.
Can you copy and paste the name of the city in Korean? Are there other teachers at the school? E-mail them or teachers at other schools in the city. |

Miryang or Milyang is one of the stops for the KTX train ( I believe). I visited there just the other day. Yes it is small, but it is very close to Busan. Probably have to do most of your socializing in Busan, probably very few foreigners in Miryang. |

Miryang or Milyang(as is spelt nowadays) is a city in the north of Kyeongsangnamdo or the southern part of this country.
Honestly, it is a bit of a backwater but as someone pointed out it does have the bullet train going through it now so Busan is easy to get to.
There is a gorgeous temple near there and it is quite nice as far as Korea goes, has a population of about 200 000 people.
Not much to do as far as foreigner activities go though. There are a few foreigners that work at the university there.
Here is the official english site for the city

I'm in Ulsan and Miryang is out in the mountains near here...someplace. I see it on highway route signs so it's not far off, though I've never been there. It has some historical significance, it's an old centre in the history of Korea. So maybe, as with Andong, it's a place that was a centre in 'the day'. I think there's a swampland out around there which is a famous bird sanctuary if you like mousquitoes. The mountains in Eunyang, forty minutes out of Ulsan and on the way to Miryang, are very spectacular. |
