we're actually doing quite well, thanks for asking) I have decided to stop buying 1L bottles of Jack Daniels twice per month. This decision was my own. Really. It is not what my Silent Protest thread is about. Really. I figured that the money saved could be put to better use.

I have yet to figure out what that better use will be, but I'm sure it'll be a dinger. Maybe I'll start "saving for the future." No time like the present, right?

I figured "why not give soju a spin?" It's cheap as hell.

Wifey was VERY enthusiastic about this self-decision. I was a little frightened, to tell the you truth, like a kid forced to take medicine he doesn't think will taste too purdy. And soju doesn't taste too purdy. It tastes like backwashed vomit.

I guess I am in the dissent here, but if you are doing well, then I don't see how two bottles are really setting you back. It sounds like the drink at night is how you relax and mellow out.... Is it really the alcohol you are needing, or is the connotations of the type of drink? All drinks are not the same.

Please, please explain this to my wife. Please. The money we save will probably go towards dry cleaning things that aren't dirty. I'm serious. If I was a millionaire I'd still catch heat for buying expensive things.

(I think this is a Korean thing. I've met plenty of rich Koreans who sport knock-off clothing -- Balli shoes? Laughing -- like it's going out of style.)

Wifey's nursing, so if she boozes she loses; because while Rapzilla might be retarded on the mic, I have no intention for her to be retarded in any other way.

Oh yes the dream effects can be quite interesting....have you ever dropped acid Question Shocked Laughing

I have never dropped acid, but I must say that, after day 3 of the Soju Saga, I'm nearly a convert. Sure, it still tastes like liquified fecal matter, but those dreams...man, they are something.

Last night, I dreamed I was not only married to Wifey, but also to her twin sister (note to male readers: sadly, this twin doesn't really exist), who was a demure, subservient version of Wifey. We went swimming. Then she asked me if there was anything, anything at all, I wanted*.

They should put something like that in a Jinro commercial.

What you drink also affects losing / or putting on weight.... and also whether you hurt your budget or not....

I too am a whiskey drinker... but because of the cost of it in korea I made do with drinking 2 bottles of soju each night during my first year here... it did the trick and fulfilled the objectives - that is

- erasing my memory for the day
- providing a good nights sleep
- giving something to look forward to each night
- making the music blaring from my speaker more hypnotical

During that year I noticed I lost heaps of weight - becoming very slim - (probably also due to my daily kimchi intake) and also developed some kind of "Immunity against hangovers"
It was cheap - as I was only buying the 1000won bottles and it never hurt my budget....

During my second year I switched to drinkin Sansachun and Mokoli - I noticed that I very steadily each month developed a "pot belly" and became much fatter.... it was also 3 times more expensive than the soju - so I found I had to do without eating treats such as pizza like I used to purchase once a fortnight or month - the previous year.

The following year I switched back to soju again - and during the following 12 months lost all the weight I had gained and I had more cash left over...

Occassionally though - I still miss the ole-whiskey - so I started purchasing a 700ml bottle of "Napoleon V whiskey" which you can buy at Emart for 5000won - once a week. - as a reward for having completed another weeks-hard-work.

Suggestion Sparkles - drink the soju each night during the week - and as a treat purchase the Napolean V whiskey for use on a Friday or Saturday night - as a kind of reward thing for having saved more money etc....

Yes - it doesn't taste the same as "Ballentines or Jack Daniels" - however it is whiskey and you will save money - you will not ruin your health or weight/gain and you have a "cheap treat" to look forward to after a hard weeks work..and survival on soju..

This is a very kind and helpful post. Thank you, Yesterday. I may stick with the soju full-time, though, because those dreams really are something. I realize this makes me a filthy traitor.

I'm telling you, Jinro should put me in a damned commercial.

quoted for accuracy. solution - make more rapzillas.

alternatively, try running. 20-30 minute run. come home, shower, shag your wife. you'll sleep better than rapzilla after mother's milk.

As yet another alkie expert on board, may I suggest a bottle of wine now and then?

Wine is not so painful as soju. And not so expensive for a reasonably drinkable brand. Under 10,000 (sometimes under 7000) can get you an adequate drop for your nightly slumbers or whatever.

I was never a wine drinker before Korea. But given the poor quality of local beer and soju, and a distaste for the hard booze, wine seemed like a good compromise. Plus I ran into another drunk who liked it. Exclamation
