I did think about a Mac but the price and the fact that I cannot buy readily available components put me off. I really want to build one and understand how it all goes together. I want to be able to pull bits out and replace them in future.

In actual fact, unless you buy very expensive software to do vid editing, Macs have no great advantage over PCs. Don't take this from me, head to www.xvsxp.com and read what they say about vid editing there. What ships free with both systems is comparable.
