I'm looking forward to getting my thumbs on Thief 3. Stealth games are really my cup of tea. I loved Hitman 2 and Hitman Contracts, though both were too forgiving on the Stealth aspect. Still playing them though, as some levels I can't get teh Silent Assassin rating yet..... |

Yeah...Hitman rocked! Thief 3 will kick too. STALKER will be the deal as well....not exactly stealth, but...looks grand.
Did you get your hands on Splinter cell : Pandora tomorrow? Pretty much just an expansion pack, IMHO. Some new stuff, new moves, cool locations...but pretty much the same fare.
It hasn't arrived in Korea yet. If you want, I can get the image files to you through Messenger or something. You have a cd burner, right?
It's 4 CDs.... |

Nice rig! You like KOTOR? How does it run?
Just wondering ...what is an nVidia "Platinum"? What series (number) is that card? Who produces it? |

you know man.. i just tossed the box last month though. Its a good card but for some reason i've got a mental block on its specs.
As for KOTOR, I pretty much only play it when my online stuff is down. Man I hate server resets! lol
I rarely play off line nowadays. Might consider it more though when the new spider man game comes out. |

Latest generation of video cards compatible with DirectX 9.0c
http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_6800.html
http://www.ati.com/products/radeonx800/index.html
Comparisons of the two:
http://www.nordichardware.com/reviews/graphiccard/2004/r420/
The review is 19 pages, so here is the conclusion for those who don't want to wade through the details-
Quote: |
The performance these two architectures have is somewhat similar. Things that differ are image quality, features and physical aspects. Because of better FSAA quality we consider ATi still to be on the lead. On the feature side the NV40 looks, on paper, like the most impressive with Shader Model 3.0. ATi have not been idle though, and the Pixel Shader 2.0b is at least a step forward although not as big as the one NV40 made. What ATi has got that nVidia has not is 3Dc, which could result in improved image quality and/or performance.
Looking at the physical characteristics there is no doubt who's got the advantage: ATi's card is smaller, less power consuming, is slightly more silent and only need one card slot. To deliver such a great performance with a card that has a relatively low physical profile, low power consumption and generates little heat is nothing else but exceptional.
As we see it, Radeon X800 XT nicks the golden crown from GeForce 6800 just by an inch. If GeForce 6800 Ultra Extreme in combination with new drivers can make it even or take the lead again remains to see. But disregarding our opinions this is an even fight that hardly has anything in common with the fight we saw between Radeon 9700 Pro and GeForce 5800 Ultra.
As you probably have noticed we have mostly been discussing performance in this review. We're hoping to make follow-up where we'll put Radeon X800 XT against Geforce 6800 Ultra Extreme and make a thorough image quality inspection. |
I didn't see anything about a 'Platinum' version of Nvidia either... could that be a reference to a package with a bunch of bundled software (games, etc.)?
Or could it be that you were thinking of 'Extreme' rather than 'Platinum'?
The only Platinum that comes to mind for me relates to soundcards. |

I know that SUMA have a line of cards called "Platinum xxx" ATI and nVidia.
http://www.suma.co.kr/
Those new cards look good, but what a waste! PCI express is going to be in soon. The ATI R423 chip is already to enter production.
Better off waiting...do the whole thing in one painful shot!
Then again, the newer cards make the older ones very price-savvy.
Too bad the new line from both companies doubles the performance from their last offering. Really...the new cards are F-A-S-T!!
Gonna need that power for Doom3 and half-life2 as well as CRY-engine based games. These engines will power the next two years of games, so for once, a graphic card may be somewhat of an investment...? |

PCI express? Is that the name of the next generation of PCI bus architecture? That's going to make a lot of hardware obsolete (including all systemboards and AGP video cards) ; But of course the flip-side it that everything will be smokin lightning fast! |

@ juggertha : Now we just need to know which series! They have a lot of "Platinum" cards...
@ Bulsajo: Yeah, a lot of stuff will become obsolete. Mainboards, graphic card...there is even a rumor that the new mainboards supporting DDR2 system RAM, if DDR1 is reaching it's ceiling. Perhaps "obsolete" is the wrong term. Current systems will be useful for a long, long time...it's the world of graphics that is currently moving the market along. If one isn't a gamer, then it is of no real significance.
Ah well...it never ends, does it? This evolution is particulary striking, as we have been using the AGP bus for a long, long time. PCI express is a 16x bus for graphics, compared to the 8x currently used. It will be with us for a long time to come, so it's a natural evolution.
Christmas will be my next big move...we will see what's happening then.
7 months in "computer time" is like 5 years in real time! |

My rig-
P4 @ 3.2 GHz (cooled with Zalman CNPS7000-Cu)
ASUS P4P800E-Deluxe Mobo
1 GB Mushkin PC3500 Memory @ 2-3-2
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (HIS Ice-Q Model)
Samsung Spinpoint SATA 160 GB HDD
Maxtor 160GB 7200 RPM External Firewire HDD
I've got Far Cry running at 1024x768 w/ 2xAA. Runs great for a while, but then suddenly drops down to like 3 fps. |

I have the same SUMA card as was mentioned above. bought it off a korean website called www.computerprice.co.kr they have a lot of killer cards for cheap(ish) prices. yeah the SUMA card is not the best, but for the price, it's excellent. it's certainly the best of the mid-level cards that I've tried. |

My laptop is below the spec of most you lot, yet I have had no trouble playing any game at max resolution (actually I had to turn one setting on Call Of Duty down to "High" rather than "highest").
I think my 64MB graphics card will be the first to cause trouble. Lets see what Halflife 2 does to it I guess (am looking forward to that!)

Spec
P4M 2.2GHz
GeForce4 4200 64bMB Card
512MB RAM
15.4 Widescreen (I love widescreen) |

HL2 will have your rig doing a slideshow. Call of Duty is based on the Q3 engine, 3 years old. Yes, it's dressed up a lot, but is no kind of benchmark. Load up UT2004, Far Cry, Painkiller or SC:pandora tomorrow...see the frames drip past.
Doom3, and HL2 will be exclusively DX9...they won't look so hot on DX8 tech (The GF4 line) and the textures alone will eat up 128 MB. The minimum specs on HL2 will probably exceed 128MB of on-card memory. Additionally, 1GB of RAM will be necessary for smooth frames.
Too bad laptops become tabletops so fast.
nVidia has the new MXM tech, featuring upgradeable PCI express video cards, as does ATI. Soon notebooks will actually be long-term gaming solutions.
Go to www.ocworkbench.com and check out the ASUS notebooks from the Computex show. Nice. |
