I always hear that statistic about dentists having such a high suicide rate. Does anyone know what the rates are for teachers? ESL teachers?
No need to get concerned. I'm just curious. |

| I dont know, but wouldnt think it was very high. I think suicide is correlated with being in high stress positions. I for one dont think teaching korean kids is stressful. though it would be interesting to see some numbers.. |

Yea, dentists and teachers, those are the same ...
Maybe you'd like to document or support your claim of dentists having a "high suicide rate."
The numbers for teachers are in-line with other professions, matching the bell curve. The CDC (US Centers for Disease Control) and WHO (World Health Organization) publishes professional trades' rates of suicide but I think it's only updated/researched every three years, I'd have to look it up to be sure.
I'll e-mail a friend of mine who I went to medical school with and ask him if he has any American Psychiatric Association statistics for teachers ... he's now a psychiatrist and may know. |

Do you teach them? Do you entertain them? |

| Well, all your statement does is fan hearsay ... which only lends credence to said information. Supporting such information is the same as a claim. Where did you hear this claim ? And what woke this thought in your head ? |

As far as it goes I am the most stress free person I know. One of the very very few things that causes stress for me would be those friggin' little fuckers. |

I sid that I frequently hear this said. It's probably not accurate. I have heard it several times throughout my life. My apologies to the dentistry profession for perpetuating stereotypes.
I don't know what brought it into my head. |

It's only a discussion and general debate and that's what my comments are.
Though the statistics are debated and change on ocassion, the generally accepted, profession with the highest rate of suicide is White Male Physicians
I'll see what my buddy comes back with |

Kind of a morbid topic, but nonetheless interesting.
I wonder about it now, too: you give up practically everything you know and are comfortable with to come here, if the job doesn't work out, then what happens? Korea can also be a very lonely place at times. But I'd hope people would rather run back home then off themselves in a foreign country. |

I would imagine the suicide rate for ESL teachers due to pressure from their jobs to be pretty low.
Suicides due to their lifestyle might be another matter. |
