Man My computer has had its third meltdown since I bought it three months ago.
I have been using different anti- viruses but they seem to work for a little while then I wake up in the morning and windows won't start again..argh!
Anyone recommend a good anti- virus? [/b] |

There might be something physically wrong with your computer. Ram, fan or Video card problems. You should check that out with the seller.
More information would be nice. Do a google search for HiJackThis and install it. Go to a site called C-net or Z-Net and dl free Zone Alarm firewall software. Spybot and Ad-Aware are also free and available on those sites. You may also find dl's for free antivirus progs.
Search for and install CoolWeb Shredder.
All this progs and others that will be recommended here can help keep viruses off your PC and remove those that slip through. You also need software to delete Temp files, cookies, history files and Java temp files.
Window Washer is great but not free. Do a search for Programz and look for an easy to install cracked version on that site. Finally some trojan remover software is a good idea.
Sorry I'm not posting links but I'm on my lunch break. I have posted links elswhere on this page. |

Can you be a bit more specific, what exactly is the problem that it throws up?
What you need to do is install XP from a fresh, then only install what you NEED, no shareware junk. And of course get Nortons. (Why people think that the free AV packages are better than the ones you buy are beyond me!!! But thats just me!)
If you have a problem like it "wont start" then at what stage of boot up does it fail at? It very well may be a hardware issue. |

i have done a fresh install all three times in which it has gone on me.
here is what basically happens....
1. Anti virus will locate the virus...anti virus says restart your computer to completely clear the virus...restart...still there, then windows won't start
2. RPC error which the 1 min countdown...this was a worm which I supposedly got rid of
3. Computer wouldn't load windows except in safe mode. Got into safe mode and tried to find out the problem but it would shut down within five minutes.
4. Tried to do a complete install of windows XP (a version sent from home so I know it works) and the computer says I am lacking some files in my RPC.
Usually my ass. director fixes it but this time it has to go to the computer repair guy hmmm |

The RPC shutdown isn't a worm. You have to go into your settings and change it from shutdown on error to "ignore" |

Run your AV in safe mode! Look on the www.symantec.com website for a removal tool. |

It can be a symptom of a worm- it (constant RPC shutdown) is the MO of one of the big viruses from last year (and I'm fairly certain you and I had this exact conversation here in the fall). |

This sounds wierd to me. What virus software are you using which you say tells you this. Could it be a hack that is actually generated by a virus encouraging you to reboot and thereby actually infecting your computer in the process?
I may be way off the mark here... |
