I am thinking about heading to Singapore for about 4 days/ 3 nights this August. Is it worth it? What is there to do there besides eat/drink and see old colonial buildings? If you have been there what would you recommend to do or see? |

I like Singapore. It is a nice clean organized place. Truly first world. The river quay is a great area with a thriving night life. Bintan - just a short ferry ride, is where the Singaporeans go for beach life.
It is a nice town to just relax - it doesn't have the tension that characterizes Seoul or Korea in general.
The Arab and Indian neighborhoods offer a great variety of wonderful foods.
Also, its just a great place to go to the movies and cruise the malls.
Overall, not a bad place to blow off a little steam and relax a bit before coming back to Korea. |

There are a couple of great bookstore (Borders and Kinokunya).
A very cheap walking tour in the evening. One of the tours is a ghost tour, another the old red light district.
Excellent food.
The nicest zoo I've ever been to, with a night safari.
Hell, even the airport is cool.
I like Singapore. Orderly, but not the nazi-ish conformity that I'd heard about. |

I just want to second what gypsyfish said about Singapore's past image as being a rather uptight place. You'll be hard pressed to find a friendlier, more mellow, truly developed city/country in SE Asia. I've ended up there about once a year for the last five years or so - and always find it an easy place to get around and do the things you need to do. No anxiety about language, crime, ripoffs, or anything else. Just a d*amn nice place.
Too bad EFL jobs there don't pay well enough to compensate for the high cost of living. |

Indian food, southeast asian food, extensive western bookstores, partying down by the river, take a boat ride off the island and back, walk around little india, plus the arabic area, plus just walking around in general, etc.
Mostly Id say good western books and good international variety of food. |
