Okay, so that's me screwed with the cello then.

What about DHL etc? Anyone sent anything ridiculously large home, such as a cello?

I took some packages to the post office last Saturday to be mailed to the U.S. and was informed that packages the combined dimensions of which exceed two meters cannot be shipped to the U.S. First I'd heard of that.
Odd. I bought about 40 books from a guy here in Busan because he was heading back home and didn't want to pay to ship them home. But I know someone who taught in Gwanju who said that she shipped a big box of stuff home from Gwanju for like 30,000 won. She did that a year or so ago. I wonder if the rules vary from city to city or post office to post office. Or maybe it's possible that Koreans just aren't consistent about this topic and keep changing the rules... Any longtime vets out there know for sure?

If it is a rule, I would bet that it's a U.S. rule, not a Korean one.

Probably part and parcel of the new "anti-terrorism" measures.

And this was for postal service shipments, not shipping company shipments. Might be different rules for those.

The rules were changed. The two times my mom sent over a package, the first time no problem. Second time size restrictions. The USPS blamed Korea for the size restrictions. Go figure....

Am cashing up in August and after 3 years, have a load of books and other stuff that I'd like to keep.
Could anyone tell me the cheapest option in sending stuff back to NZ from Korea?
Thanks in advance.

Korea Post surface mail is the cheapest option. I've sent home 5 boxes in the last few weeks, and here's what I've spent:

18.83kg..... 50 700 won
14.70kg..... 40 000 won
15.07kg..... 40 000 won
18.90kg..... 50 250 won
18.76kg..... 51 150 won

I can't explain why the last is more expensive then the first, but I think it's reasonable either way. 20 kg is the maximum for surface mail (30 kg for priority) so it's always a guessing game get it right (had to take out two sweatshirts yesterday).
You can track them online too, so it seems cool.

Just for your info...

America to Korea:
I am having my computer (and speakers etc.) sent to me right now. I think the box weighed something like 45 pounds. It cost $470. Not too pretty. I sent it through the USPS / DHL. And as of right now, it is held up in customs.
