This has bothered me for about a month, so if anyone has any idea about this, please let me know.
I just graduated from college this past May with a double major in History and Behavioral Science. When I graduated however, I was given only 1 degree. The reason being that both majors fell under the division of Bachelor of Arts. So when I applied to jobs in Korea (I luckily found a job), I wrote on my resume my double major. When I had to prepare my papers to send to Korea, I only had the one degree to send and my transcript. My transcript states my double major, so it wasn't a problem but I'm just wondering how am I to prove I double majored without tossing out my transcripts over and over again (in Korea or in the U.S.)? I really don't want anyone to think I'm lying about the double major; I mean 5 years and 38,000 USD and I can't prove what I actually accomplished.
Anyone had this happen to them?
Another question is about the degree itself. It only says Bachelor of Arts (no mention of a major on it), so how is anyone to know what I actually majored in? I could say I was a Ed or English major and noone would know the difference without the transcripts.
Sorry if this seems confusing but I'm kinda confused about this myself.

Good eye, Real Reality. I didn't even realize I made that error. It is a B.A.
I just think it would make people think the transcript is fake or something when I can only present the one degree. Maybe I'm just too paranoid

The diploma is for the degree, not the major. You have only one degree with two majors.
The immigration department does not care what your major is. You do not need to prove your major to them, only that you have a BA.

I work at university and don't see anything wrong with your degree. you probably studied two years of foreign language to earn your a b.a., right? it all makes perfect sense. lots of people get one degree, but end up completing multiple majors/and minors. it is very common. you could have earned a b.a. in history and a b.s. in behavioral science by meeting two degree requirements; two years of foreign language for a b.a. and one year of math for a b.s. , but i've found lots of american kids don't want to do both.

Yikes, you don't know what you graduated with ?
Double major doesn't mean two degrees, at least not where I'm from. It only means your course(s) of study. Your degree plan is what your degree will be, and your major is your major field of study, minor is your minor field of study.
You have your single degree in the field your degree states, you didn't earn two Bachelor degrees |

| If you want, you can request that your university write a short letter stating that the two majors you completed were part of your Arts degree program. It's been done before. |

Thanks everyone for the info.
I guess I'm just greedy and want two degree thingies on my wall  I think it's more of a pride thing for me more than anything. But like mentioned before on this board: it's just a piece of paper.
I think I will get do what VanIslander suggested and get my school to write me a letter.

Of course, she got one degree, and that is all she needs for a job, but I'm guessing she's looking for an edge, and wants her double major recognised. Unfortunately the transcripts are the only thing that will do this for you. Get used to it, get a whole bunch of copies of them. It may be inconvenient, but when you land that nice job, you'll feel it was worth it. |

There is a big difference between Double Major and Double Degreed
I find it troublesome that someone can make it through college and graduate and NOT understand this concept |

I work at university in the states. I talk to kids everyday about stuff. I am not kidding you about this.....most of them don't understand this concept. |

What's so fishy?
My school requires Environmental Liberal Arts(ELAs) courses for everyone. The only difference between the majors are the classes required to take to fulfil the major itself. I took the ELAs and took the required classes for both majors, so I would have liked to get 2 degrees. I have a job in Korea waiting for me, so it is only a matter of not looking like a fraud because I can't produce 2 degrees (I honestly don't want to be perceived as a liar). Does that make any sense? I don't know what it is like in other colleges, so that is why I asked here...just to know what other schools do.

It wasn't explained to me before hand that I would only receive only one degree. Otherwise, I would have been a psychology major(B.S.) instead of Behavioral Science (B.A.) and gotten the 2 degrees I wanted. Does that answer your question.

because americans are STUPID! HAHA, ok I was just kidding there. After reading constant never-ending Korean bashing threads, I thought I should have my little moment. Anyhoo, it could get complicated.
ok, here are some difficult ones - since you sound like you understand the simple basic concept.
1. the majors must be offered by different schools/colleges of the university, for example, a B.A. from the College of Arts of Science in English and a B.S. from the Business School in Accounting. Allen could not have gotten two degrees because her two majors could have been offered from the same college.
2. students must complete a certain number of more credits. For instance, in our school, kids are required to complete a minimum of 36 credits more than the requirements of the major/degree requiring the most number of credits. A student completing a B.Arch and a B.A. must complete 231 credits for the B.Arch plus 36 additional credits for the B.A. for a total of 267 credits. Lots of kids have hard time of understanding this concept.
3. I could go on....but I will stop here. it is only 10:10 am on Monday morning here. yawn.....all I am saying is that it is not easy to understand this stuff and let's cut some slacks for her. |
