I am currently taking a short hiatus from playing computer games as its summer, but when I do I like intellectually stimulating strategy games. And nothing, nothing compares with the games from Paradox, a small little computer outfit from Sweden.

For the most part they make richly historical, highly complex strategy games with lots of support and later add ons. Not the easiest games to play, but once you get the hang of them say goodbye to your weekend.

I lost many 'o weekend to Age of Empires II

Lately, I've been rekindling my love for Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City... Can't wait for San Andreas to come out the end of the year. Something about killing hundreds of people really takes the edge off a bad day at the hagwon...

Actually, it's the fear of losing an entire weekend to a game that keeps me away from such games.

I did play Age of Empires for a while, but I just couldn't get immersed enough to continue.

Paradox is a company I haven't heard of. I will look into them. There are many great and graphically intense games coming out of Eastern Europe these days as well. The Crytech engine out of Germany, for example, was originally a technical demo only, until Ubisoft saw the potential for a game and produced Far Cry.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will be coming soon too, which I believe will be amazing, both in story and graphics. Coming out of the Ukraine, it promises to be a hit with it's full DX9 engine and intense storyline. Painkiller released by People Can Fly, although lacking in story and depth, is out of the Czech Republic...graphics look great, but again, the story is really bad.

I have no doubt about how rich the Paradox games are and perhaps even historically accurate, nor about their addictiveness, but I stick to action games, which are generally easier to turn off.

Now, some action games such as the old Half-life, or more recently, the Splinter cell series, Far Cry or Thief, are highly story-driven, making them a little bit tougher to just play for 10 or 15 minutes, then get on with life.

The run 'n' gun games like Quake 3, UT2004 or CS are easy to play for a short time, and I find that they are fun, but only for a short time, which is a benefit for my life.

Looking forward to Half-life 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Doom 3, which I'm sure I will lose a fair bit of time to this fall.

No, I don't currently have it, nor am I at my own computer until the weekend.

I will have a look on Friday night and see what I can come up with.

I guess you use P2P networks here, yes? Which one do you use?

I am using Overnet at your recommendation, Emule, and Kazaa. I have tried a couple others but I don't like anything that comes bundled with adware so that limits the options a bit.

I considered using a Korean P2P but I figure that since that game hasn't even been released here, the chances of a copy being on one of these clients is pretty dubious at best.

I'm gonna reformat my hdd this week after I finish my backup on my new external. Maybe I'll add a couple of new p2p clients after I get back up and running again.

My computer is getting a little slow these days due to some spyware, malware, and viruses that sneaked their way onto my computer. I was also playing around with some shareware and unsigned XP software drivers. Aish, what a pain!

Cool....but really dude...stay away from Kazaa. I have heard some speculation that because they are going to go the way of napster soon, they are logging a lot of inforamtion and we all know what can happen to logs when a company is under pressure, right?

Not paranoid, but paranoid. The days of P2P are coming to an end in many ways.

I downloaded Fallout 2 from Kazaa last year...

I use Kazaa Lite 2.10...never had a problem with it. And it's still the best for me to find episodes of "Arrested Development" and "Scrubs."

Do you want a copy of 2.4.3? I got it right before they stopped distributing kazaa lite. It works pretty well and has an IP blocker incorporated into the programme.

Thanks, but I've become superstitious after all of my friends complained that their Kazaa Lites don't work anymore, so I've decided to stick with mine as long as it keeps getting me everything I want.

Oh, and I just searched for Fallout 2. It was on there. It's around 550 MB or so.

Stay away from Kazaa altogether.

The other P2P programs can have a steeper learning curve and are therefore less attractive, but they are safer than Kazaa, K-Lite, or any other brand of Sharman/Fastrack network.

They are selling the farm, guys.

Well, I just loaded up Overnet and got 4 or 5 hits...I dunno if they are reliable or not. 2 CDs right? Seems to be there, although not a good number of people have it, meaning a slow download.

E-Mule is the way to go. It seems to be found on a couple of servers there too.

Learn about E-Mule and Bit Torrent. Use Torrent for newer files and Mule for all others.

The reason I still prefer Kazaa is that I just assume that more people are using it, which means more chances to find the files you want.

Do you think this is still true, though, because I've heard a lot of people talk about overnet and Emule? I tried Ares, but I wasn't too impressed. It took forever to find files, and it didn't download as fast. The reason I like Kazaa now is that it takes everyone who has the file that you want and it combines them all into one download...
