the following post is meant totally in a tongue in cheek manner:
The Lemon:

If you can't find a particular thread, it's possible that it fell victim to this. So don't freak out - it was a technical thing, not a moderator decision.

I smell a cover up, a conspiracy of some sorts ...
My theory:
The Mods took the board down ... to delete threads ...
The Truth Is Out There / Trust No One. |

If you're looking for info as to why the board was closed, I think Dave's recent Global Announcement speaks volumes.
I for one would really like to know what sort of agreements the US has with the ROK and the EC with regard to the prosecution of persons who are found to have committed DOS and possibly even Critical Infrastructure attacks (because that's what the internet is these days; it's right up there with telecommunications, electricity, hydro, and banking services as critical for a state to operate), and I hope those involved get whats coming to them.
Attacking a website (even something as innocuous as an ESL site) in most countries is no longer considered a prank- it's considered a crime. What has happened is the modern-day equivalent of smashing store windows- maybe no one got physically hurt but the business involved sure as hell can sue you for repair costs, lost revenue, and punitive damages...

The internet retards got caught with their pants down when the Koreanesl webmaster posted their IP's they weren't masking.....very helpful for the police to investigate the IP's that turned up there. At least the Korean ones.
I would imagine some of them will be getting visited soon.
The question is, who is going to rat out whom once the police start turning the screws? |

| I get nervous sometimes because some of the psychos and whack jobs who were kicked off this board get really vicious about some of us on other boards. Clearly, if this was a hack job, some of these guys have the time and the inclination to make trouble for others. They are the ones that need to get a life. Or maybe get life? |

This attack - like most hacks - was pretty amateurish. The hacker got some canned scripts online and let 'er rip. The only reason the result was so brutal was that Dave never expected to be attacked in the first place.
I suspect that the attacker, who's no doubt reading this, never expected the damage to be so great, and is feeling remorse.
And if he/she isn't feeling remorse, I suspect it's because he/she thinks Dave's ESL Cafe is some kind of evil empire that must be toppled. They probably picture Dave laughing maniacally and raking in the cash, and think he's open game. Or he/she blames the mods.
But what they fail to realize is that if it was about the money, Dave would've cashed out years ago. Remember that he started this site BEFORE the internet bubble, when guys were getting millions of dollars for ideas, let alone fully-functional websites with an audience. If he only wanted money, he could've sold this site several times over.
Of course, the reason he didn't sell it was because he has an idea of what it's supposed to be, because he's put a lot of time and effort into it, because he loves ESL and the internet, and because it's as much a part of him as his own family.
Seeing the cafe go down might have been funny for the attacker, but that doesn't change the fact that who was knocked down was one of their own - a guy with a passion and a family just trying to make a buck doing something he likes. |
