I'm allergic to bee stings (and housecleaning), and I've never heard a Korean tell me that they or someone they know is also.

Furthermore, I've never heard of Koreans being allergic to peanuts. Nor have I met an asthmatic Korean.

Is it the kimchi? It's gotta be the kimchi, right?

i believe the reason that more westerners are allergic to peanuts is because we get overexposed to them. but i could be wrong.

not to be arguementative, but where did you come up with that? How would overexposure cause you to become allergic?? If that was the case wouldnt some koreans BE allergic to Kimchi

allergies are caused by several things..
1) heredity
2) lack of breast feeding (do asians breastfeed more?)
3) mucous membranes of the nose, eyes and airways.

it would be interesting to know though why less asians have allergies

you can become allergic to things. not all allergies are with us when we are born. my friend explained it once to me and it made sense at the moment.

I had noodle stir-fry for lunch, and there was peanut oil in it; that's what led me to this post.

And I want answers, dammit! I hope kids dying of peanut allergies aren't being classified as fan deaths.

Royjones, that being allergic to kimchi bit made me laugh.

I would think that the majority of Koreans have what could be classified as an allergy to alcohol due to their alcohol dehydrogenase issues.

It's pretty instructive that the Korean word for allergy is 'allergy'. I don't think Korean doctors believe in them.

I honestly don't know why Asians get them less or not at all in comparison to Westerners.

In any case, P.P., your friend is quite correct about becoming allergic and that allergies are not necessarily present since we were born.

I just used google to find some information about allergies and it is such a large topic. I was quite surprised. Since westerners are coming to Korea in larger number, there need to be something done in terms of getting a list of ingredients at restaurants or something. It seems like allergies can be a simple inconvenience or deadly.

Laughing Laughing Laughing

we had a terrible time identifying my son's allergy, which at the time was milk (most likely due to the milk based formula we supplemented breast feeding with). then came the asthma followed by a peanut allergy.

i am allergic to nada; same with my parents. and we have zero asthma cases in our family history. however my (korean) brother-in-law had "a breathing condition" when he was a child. it took over a year for me to uncover that mystery.
