I feel poor when...
...I have a drink with ice cubes -- actual ice cubes! -- in it.

Well, there are alternatives:
ps -- Not owning a car is a good thing. Same goes for a TV set. |

Now, there's nothing wrong with being poor, so long as you have a strong work ethic and aren't simply lazy or a drunk/drug-addict. That said, these are the things that make me feel poor, living in Korea:
- using toilet paper as napkins AND paper towels, when I'm not using it to wipe my butt, that is.
- I have no clothes dryer. Clothes dryers are considered a luxury item.
- I have no car. I'm a bus jockey.
- I have no a/c. No matter how hot I get, I tell myself I can make it through this summer and buy one next year. I said the exact same thing last year.
- Half my socks have holes in them. One thing Korean socks are not known for, in my opinion, is their outstanding quality.
- Occassionally, I have to kill a roach (last year: 3, this year: none, so far).
- My windows are fronted with metal bars. My name is Luka, and I live on the 2nd floor.
- I have no vacuum. Wifey likes picking up hair and crumbs with a roll of sticky tape. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.
- I feel guilty when I flush t.p. down the crapper.
- Sometimes, if I wake up between 4 and 5 am, I can hear stray cats fighting/copulating.
- Furniture missing from our apartment: bed, sofa, comfortable chair(s), dining table, decent fridge, etc. I'm moving next May; it's reasonable to put off these purchases until after then, right?

my suggestion to you is to utilize your lack of things. strip your walls and paint them white and create as much open space as you can. try to capitalize on the idea that you have few things.
throw away more things
make your house what you are. what are you?
well
you get my idea
oh yes, I doubt you are POOR! have you ever been poor? really poor? |

Still, if I were you, I'd at least get a small A/C or a super-big fan and large-capacity dehumidifier for you home -- if not for you, then for the comfort and sanity of your guests.

As opposed as I am to the idea that clothes dryers are unnecessary luxury items, I'm starting to feel that air-conditioners are a tad overrated. So far this summer -- same goes for last year -- I've had no prob sleeping with only a fan. I suppose it helps that I'm at home only in the mornings and evenings (and when it's really damn hot I'm at work, in an a/c-equipped office), and that my apartment is close to a mountain dale.
Still, when I move into my new place, I'm getting the biggest, most expensive a/c on the market -- and then will never use it, like every Korean home I've ever visited.

it's a good instance for some dumb f.. to come in with ideas about being poor and what the government determines is poor. Meaningless tax related numbers that do nothing but insult people who are actually poor.
I was never poor, but now I'm considered RICH!
What a bunch of shit this world is made out of at times. You have yourself and you have your self respect and nothing can stop that.

Agreed.
PS - I, Wifey, and posco's lunchbag are very, very happy that the site is back up and running.

Not having a dryer is being poor?
My mother can easily afford one, but would never buy one. |

Do people still buy stuff from IKEA???? Isn't it like European Wal-mart or Target? Unless you're a college kid who moves around once a year, buy well-made antique furniture. They last forever, and you can hand them down to your kids. It is also recycling in many ways; good for the environment. |

I feel poor next to the millionaires on TV, when I hear they spend more on shoes in one year than I earn in two. Or people who make more per day than I do in a year or two.
But it's relative. Some could live well on less than what we make. |
