I don't feel poor in Korea. If you're married, your wife doesn't work, and you're trying to make a real life in Korea on a hagwon salary, you might feel poor. But if you're just here for a couple years with a view to "save money, enjoy the free apartment, and enjoy korea" and you don't smoke or drink heavily or take cabs everywhere, you're pat.

I'm quite good with budgeting ("this is how much I want to save, this his how much to pay utilities/apartment common fee, and this is all the cash I have left per month to spend on food/entertainment"). I find most months, come a new pay day, I still have 100,000 won to spend from my last pay check. (Designer clothing is the soft underbelly of my budget but given it's harder to find clothes that fit properly in Korea it's harder to blow $200 on pants and sweaters here.)

All in all, being $100 under budget every month is a good position to be in.

Please -- lunchBOX. (do a google image search on 'gilligan lunchbox' and you'll see a lunchbox by artist/illustrator Isabel Samaras.
Please note that the lunchbox may violate the anti-obscenity laws of the locality in which you reside. Laughing )

No.

I feel poor when I have a drink without ice cubes in it.

Beer obviously doesn't count.

spending a year in korea to save money, then coming home to Australia where the dollar is killing me! $3.60 for a subway/train ticket... f$@% me!

Obviously I will be returning to korea very soon so that once more i can live a life of luxury... in a korean sort of way.

THIS IS THE BEST POSTING! Man, you're hilarious! I was crying reading those!

I feel poor when:

Shocked My milk jug is halfway empty and I refill it with water, so I have a full jug again!

Shocked I scrounge around the floor after class to find any pencils and pens the kids left behind for my pencil case.

Shocked Everytime I get a letter from home, I recycle the envelope to send it back home again using label stickers to cover up the -sent address.

Shocked The chairs in the living room were taken off a garbage pile...and I still eye the garbage piles for good deals.

Shocked I collect the candy the kids give me...put it in a bag and give it to the next class I teach!

BAH HA HA HA! AND A/C IS NOT FOR CANADIANS! We like it HOT! Twisted Evil

Oh the roomie just mentioned 3 more!

Shocked Our dishes are old plastic take out dishes that are all floppy and have so many cut marks in them they are probably infested with germs.

Shocked Our cutlery is courtesy of the take-out people too (spoons and wooden chopsticks) and the few small spoons from Baskin Robbins.

Shocked We don't buy the garbage bags that we're supposed to, instead we sneak out after the sun goes down and throw our trash on the pile, since during the day we are usually yelled at!

WE ARE POVERTY!!!!!!

Another thing that makes me feel poor:

Even though we have a counter with shelves and drawers, all the spoons, knives and chopsticks (sadly, no forks -- I wish I was kidding) are kept inside the bottom half of an old 2 litre bottle of water.

I feel poor because:

Our furniture is off the street, with tears in all the vinyl and wire holding the legs on the table and chairs. Our cleaning lady yelled, disgusted, at my husband when he brought the sofa home.

I always feel hungry all day on Monday until I get paid by a weekly private and then rush to the supermarket to buy food, hoping to stretch the 40,000 for 5 days of meals.

I eat at my husband's work cafeteria where I hate the food, cause I don't need cash to pay for it.

It takes 10 minutes of struggling to open the doors on our car, and if you slam doors too hard, panels fall off the side.

I only have 2 maternity outfits so have to handwash one every night.

Cigarette smoke fills our bathroom when the people downstairs smoke in their bathroom.

I feel RICH because:

We have a cleaning lady who can yell at us for bringing gross furniture in the house.

I can command 40,000 won for a private if I want to.

My husband has a decent job where I can exploit the cafeteria.

We have a car.

I have enough good taste not to buy one of those frilled maternity smocks.

...(can't think of a way the smoke coming up the drain of our bathroom could have an 'up' side)
