For the vibrating belts, I use those for a quick massage on my back. Some Korean friends of mine think they encourage weight loss but I doubt it. Just a great way to relax after a workout. (also watching the girls use it from the neck down is a great form of entertainment)

Agreed.

I use the vibrating belts as a massage tool. They don't have any other benefit.

Try putting them up on your shoulders and lean back. It's great for a relaxing five minutes between work-outs.

Yep thats it. So what do you exactly like about it? Is it good for stretching?

There is another machine they have thats new to me. Its like a giant curling roll covered with wooden beads. They use it for massage as well.

It happened again last night. The "coach" of my gym (who shouldn't be allowed to coach korea's 12 and under amateur special olympics leapfrog team) stopped some guy in the middle of a set to show him the "proper form." The guy was doing a tricep pull down when the coach grabbed the bar in mid rep. He proceeded to demonstrate the right way - elbows flared way out, leaning overtop of the bar so that it came up and hit the bottom of his ribcage (literally pushing straight down). Since the members treat the guy like a fricken military general, the guy of course followed suit and finished hit set using the trainers gay ass technique (which if he were lucky may have had a peripheral effect on his lower chest but certainly not the triceps.)

Has anyone attempted to correct a trainer?

This is the 5th gym i've been to in 2 years and there are some unmistakable commonalities I've noticed...

- the free weights begin at 5 kilos and then increase by one kilo increments until reaching 16. At that point the next lightest weight is 20 then 25 and finally 30. If these were pounds this might be acceptable but we're talking kilos here.

- The gym trainer is either some spindly little weasel or some tubby Guy Smiley who wears stars and stripes warm-ups.

- The music consists of 5 songs (either k-pop or really bad 80's hair rock) on a loop that plays over and over.

- At some point during your workout the trainer will go to some random machine that just happens to be directly in front of you, load it with as much weight as possible and proceed to do 3 or 4 reps while grunting like a constipated rhino with bronchitis. He'll finish, pop up and stare straight at you sporting the Derrek Zoolander "blue steel" gaze and then head back to his little chair for the remainder of your workout.

hehe- well I think I'm getting a better deal than most people at the little health club at the local sauna- 5,000 won a visit if you want to hire the shorts and shirt

Agreed, but I'll only complain if and when I can curl 16 KGs without breaking a sweat

That's a great mental image.
I'm sure I'd get of the psyche out stuff if I looked like some kind of challenge to the manhood of the (occasional) serious macho guy, but loading the absolute maximum then doing 3 or 4 reps seems to be the general rule with most people. Only 1 set too.

Yeah i guess I have. At my old gym the trainer was one of those "stretch in as many odd ways as possible and warm up your heels if your training delts" kinda guys.

I told him to bugger off when he tried to give me advice. Eventually after I trained a number of the compeditors in the gym he came over and asked if he could train with me. grrrr I agreed and he turned out to continue to be the most annoying bugger.

Some ppl never learn.

That's when you go to the exact same machine and load on MORE weight and do MORE reps. If you are lucky, you can eventually coax him into injuring himself. Then you never need worry about the above scenario again. Laughing

How can anyone exercise without any music? I feel very lucky that my gym not only has music playing in the exercise room, but that the treadmills all have TVs. There's nothing so boring as watching the timer count up to 20 or 30 minutes in silence.

as for the form thing, i totally feel that. at my last gym i was doing crunches (correctly) and the trainer dude came over and tried to make me curl my neck and interlock my fingers. what a freak. why don't they know how to exercise/train properly?

I thought Shocked , and what was most funny was the guy got up and apologized!

So...I say what's wrong with the music and I hit the gym today. And I find one of the trainers must be a BIG MC Hammer fan. There are exceptions to every opinion, I guess.... Razz

The trainer at my gym is a good guy who knows what he is doing. I've heard about this problem at other gyms though. Some have even quit because of it.

I do have a bit of a problem with others at the gym wanting to show me the "proper method" of doing an exercise. I must now know at least 3 or 4 different methods for the Tricep Pulldowns. I know that they just want to be helpful. Although, I wonder if some of them just want to showoff in front of the waygook.

I guess you have never been to my gym then??? It's raining men in Korean and other burping and farting noises. Damn Korean Dance music.

There's lots of stuff better than MC Hammer! In fact, it was strange today...they played a song by a Korean rock band that I really enjoy, before launching into the MC Hammer Love-fest. (Hope they didn't switch to his songs for *my* benefit! Shocked )
One of these days I will invest in an MP3 player, I suppose. Just hope they don't play Paula Abdul tomorrow. Razz
