Hey, Just wanted to really find out if this tax thing is a scam. I pay about 5% each month, and with all my O.T, its starting to really ad up, prob like 800 000 over 6 months. Also, how do we get this money back? Is it true if I don't fulfill the contract I don't get a penny back, sorry a won?

If anyone knows anything about this please let me know. Oh, and I'm a Canuck, not sure if that makes a difference.

Big Al

We get our pension money back, not our taxes. Usually in a hagwon, you pay 4.5% and the hagwon pays 4.5% of your salary. You get it back when you leave or present a plane ticket out of here.

So do I need paper work from the boss to do this, or just pay slips?

and does he have the right not to give this to me?

The boss doesn't hold the money- you have to go to the Korean pension office. I'm pretty sure if you run a search on pension rebate you'll find exact instructions.

BTW, Make sure you're in Korea for at least a year and have more ties in Korea than back in Canada. If the Canadian government decides that you were still a resident of Canada when working here then you'll have to pay more taxes when you get back. But if you're here for over a year, don't own any real estate in Canada or have any dependants etc... you should be fine. But definitely stay for the full 12 months. I left early last year and had to pay more taxes when I went back to Canada.

For the pension money you need a plane ticket, passport, alien card and account number where you want the money to go. They can also issue you a cheque. Takes 4 to 6 weeks.
