Why do Korean teachers give the kids English names that they don't even know how to spell? I have a Jully, a Jacky, a Tomas (mind you that could be Polish), a Cen a Rori, and a girl named Joel.

Irks the crap outta me.

And the bank machine that says: "Take your receipt and so cash would be gotten out of the ATM."

I have my favorite notebook that declares, "I'm a crap!" Makes me feel special every time I see it.

Some bad names indeed, or bad spellings.

But if that's what they want...?

Names like "Beckham" and "Eminem"

"Stephany" (she insisted on that spelling)

"Remix" "Ostin" (meant to be after "Stone Cold Steve Austin")

"Jeniffer" (usually spelled that way)

"Pocahantas" "Stick" "Stamp"

etc....

Try "Skeletor."

We had a temp teacher (a member of this board, BTW) who named a kid Skeletor. Later, I got them to change his name to Jimmy, but the kid wanted to change it back to Skeletor. I think the parents were consulted on this and were told that Skeletor is not a common name for boys in America, so they eventually changed it to something else.

I do miss starting report cards with, "Skeletor is a good kid..."

We also have a kid named "Dumbo." We have tried in the past to get his parents to change his name, but they refuse. And it's not like they're not aware of its negative connotation, since his older sister is a genius and knows full well what his name means.

I guess it only balances my karma if I send my kid to a Korean language school and give him the Korean name "Babo."

I do a lot of proofing and editing. Some of the English articles that these guys are trying to submit to Academic Journals and the like is astounding. I think part of the problem is that they do their writing in Korean. It is then translated by a Korean into English. You know the rest of the story.

Secondly, Koreans don't seem to understand that there are certain rules, etc. that must be followed (in any language). Many of them simply refuse to master what seems to them to be small details. For example....using articles, paying attention to when they should be adding an /s/ and the list goes on.

I tell my students...........native speakers will probably understand your bad English but they will laugh at you behind your back. They will respect you if you make an effort to get the "small" details right. Some understand my message, many cannot be botherd.

When you have those in the industry getting it wrong is it little wonder that the students do?

I see 1th, 2th, 3th more commonly. I like signs that say "2th apartment," "2th temple," etc.

My hagwon classrooms were fruit names: apple, papaya, starwberry [sic], & so on. Last expansion I think they must have been running low on the snazzy wooden cut-out letters -- the last classroom was named "eel."
