My computer service guy tells me that I'll need a new CPU soon (super overheating problem! Old CPU with 100 Gigs. I've replaced all of the fans PLUS had a thermal sink installed).

A couple of questions: Can I replace the CPU without replacing the hard drives? (Software I know...hardware... !!!) And (ballpark figure) how much will that cost?

The CPU is the computer processor... this has absolutely nothing to do with the hard drives. If you're having heat problems, you need to open up the case and figure out just where all of the heat is being generated. Another important thing is to make sure that the fans in the computer are installed correctly. The fans should be in such a way that if the fan in the front of the computer is drawing in air, the fan the back of the computer is sucking air out. This way, airflow is being created inside the case. If need be, you can purchase extra fans and add them into the equation to improve the airflow. Could you tell the peanut gallery what type of CPU you have and the placement of the fans inside your computer?

Funny thing being able to predict when the CPU is going to go south.....wish I had that uncanny ability. Him being able to say that, but being unable to remedy the heat situation (how does he know this?) makes him less of a "computer guy" and more of a silicon prophet.

Anyhow, you can replace your CPU without touching the hard drives, but I doubt the same holds true for your mainboard. If the CPU is as old as you let on, the mainboard is probably incompatible for the newer lines. Then, you will probably need new RAM as well...and a power supply...

CPU can cost as much or as little as you want to spend. If you only want a new CPU, then heck...get the same as what you have from the used bin at Yongsan. If you want to go newer, as I said, you will have to shell out for other parts aas well.

Could it be that you're using "CPU" to mean "the box part of my computer"? Some people do that, though "Can I replace the CPU without replacing the hard drives" implies that you do in fact mean the processor. But from the sound of your post, your computer service guy didn't do a very good job explaining the situation, particularly this: "Old CPU with 100 Gigs". 100 gigs of what? Ram (128MB perhaps?) 100 gigs of hard drive space?

It's hard to tell from here, but this sounds like "make the customer buy as much new stuff as possible that he doesn't need", like auto repair shops do back home.

If you do need a new CPU/mainboard/RAM set - and there's no "overheating" reason I can think of to require you do this, unless the CPU is installed wrong or weirdly defective, expect to pay from 250,000w and up. Used stuff is cheaper, of course.

As the others said, you don't need to buy a new hard drive.

Download Belarc advisor, run it on your pc, and tell us what it says. That's the easiest way for us to see your pc's configuration.

No, no, no...even I know that I don't have 100 Gigs of RAM!! 2 hard drives: 1 20 and 1 80.

I ran the Belarc and the results are below. Everything looks ok...I think? Ok, I MAY have mis-understood the computer guy. He's an up-and-up guy...I've been going to him for various things and the charges are always MORE than reasonable, and he'll even make free housecalls! What I know is this: I bought the system used at Younsan about 2 years ago and installed the extra 80G hard drive, CD and DVD R/W. I've had every fan replaced. 3 fans: 1 in front, two at the back. As for what kind of CPU I have: No idea!!! I know SOME things about hardware, but not a whole heck of a lot! Where can I find out?

Right here.

This is your mainboard:

And this is your CPU:

I don't know anything about AMD processors except that they have a reputation for running hot.

As for overheating- have you actually been experiencing any problems yet due to overheating?
You might consider throwing another fan or two in there- cheapest and easiest solution. There are tons of cooling options, just depends on what you want/need to spend.
I don't think the software CPU coolers will help you (Rain/Waterfall/AMN Refrigerator) since you're running WinXP.
Board's a little old... to upgrade the CPU you might need a new one (and so new ram as well).
Unless you're having serious problems due to overheating and/or are dying to play the latest games, I'd hang on to this one for a while longer and start saving up now for the day when you'll need a new board/cpu/ram.
I can only guess that this is more or less what your computer guy was trying to tell you.

When I was doing research for the new ( desktop) pc, I noticed the AMD Athlon XP's seem to have a solid rep as the best of the midlevel CPUs.I bought an XP 2500, and will report back on price this evening.

Thanks Bulsajo! I think that's probably what he was trying to tell me...the language barrier you know!! Anyway, I'll see if he'll install a couple of more fans. I HAVE been having overheating problems...every couple of months or so...but adding fans could let me hold on to this one for a little longer. Thanks again!
