Here's an idea for a thread...

"How long did it take you to have sex with a Korean girl (which you prefer to western women) that liked foreign guys wearing Korea Newfie's t-shirt?"

I'm sure he'd do, "Love me, because I prefer you to my fellow foreigners, and often blindly criticize them to defend you." if you asked. Laughing

I'd given a thought to making a t-shirt that said ...

I Love George Bush

or America is Great

... could make a reality show, see how long you could survive wearing those t-shirts.

Laughing haha, you funny man. You're the one walking round in a stupid t-shirt trying to draw attention to yourself.

So Koreans don't look at foreigners? No extra attention there whatsoever? Either you're way out of touch with reality, or you know it happens and just want to be a d!ck about it.

Butterfly wrote:

A.) In order to see the shirt, they'd have to be looking at me. If their attention isn't drawn to me, they won't see the shirt. If you stopped to think before jumping into your anti-foreigner tirade, you'd see the folly of your logic. I realize you take every opportunity to attack foreigners, but some are less appropriate than others.

B.) Every Korean who has seen it has thought it was hilarious. Every foreigner I've encountered has thought it was hilarious. (Read the posts asking where they can get one...) Yours has been the only negative reaction I've encountered. That I expected it from you makes it no less irritating. It even goes beyond apologism, as other's have no problem. Kangnamdragon (cool dude, btw) had this to say:
Quote:
I would consider myself to be an "apologist" and I find it very funny. Koreans at my office think it is hilarious and told me to get one.

Given that these people all like it, why do you feel it is your duty to make snide comments? What, exactly, is your problem with this?

C.) It's all in good fun. In fact, it has opened dialogue with Koreans who are able to see humour. Why is fun so troublesome to you? Is your life so sad and full of anger that you hate to see others having a good time?

D.) I'm going home in 5 days, and I have better things to do than argue with someone who hates his own people. I suspect you were rejected by your peers at home, but came here and were accepted. Whenever you see a foreigner here, you see that guy who picked on you in 1st (or 12th) grade. Or that guy who stole your girlfriend (or...you know). This has lead you to forget who you are, and to hate anything foreigners do. You're like a man-hating radical feminist, which you may well be, only sadder.

Sad You sad, sad man. If bashing me brings joy to your life, then I'm glad to help out.

Sorry to anybody else who had to read that. I'm just really sick of his crap.

Posted an equally viscious response and deleted it. You're heading out soon, don't want to send you any more bad vibes than you seem to have picked up from this penninsula.

It's because I don't hate my own kind that I don't want you to wear that T-shirt Newfie. I think we can represent ourselves so much better than that.

Anyway, peace man. Have a good and safe return to your family.

I guess I have to reply part by part, as tedious as that is.

I've been trying to feel bad about being so angry and insulting, but I just can't. You've jumped on me for no reason in the past, and I've had enough.

Don't presume to know how I feel about this place. I've quite enjoyed myself here. Of course, there've been good and bad times, but if it was as terrible as you seem to think it is for me, I'd have gone long ago. Spent the day with my buddy Taek-il in Ganghwado, which I've been meaning to do for a while. That was a great time. You seem to think that people on here who complain are Korea-haters. I think you miss the subtle point that when we're having fun, we're out, uh, having fun. When we're pissed, we come here to commisserate. Seeing this distinction would relieve a lot of your stress. While you may use this board to gather and share information, and communicate with friends, I (and others) often use it as my own private venting outlet. I neither know nor care how you feel about that, but it's true. (Yes, there are haters here. But not everybody who fails to write about how much they love everything here is one.)

Okay, I'll go for a moment with your theory that your problem is that it's inappropriate representation. Why not write, "Hey, Korea Newfie, I think this shirt is lacking in social conscience, and might not represent foreigners well." That's perfectly fine. I disagree, but such is life. But you wrote,
Quote:
A Korean t-shirted response in English might be in order.

"Don't flatter yourself?"

Based on your sarcastic initial post, I reject your subsequent explanation, and again offer mine:
It's humour (the definition of which I've appended for your perusal). Aside from you, people seem to enjoy it. It's not insulting, but playful. If I had, "I f***ing hate all you f***ing Koreans" then yes, you'd have a point. As it is, however, you're overreacting. In fact, saying that you're overreacting would imply that a negative response is required, but just a lesser one would be more appropriate. However, I don't think one is required at all. Nor, apparently, do all the people who posted in this thread praising it.

Challenge: Show my picture with the shirt to 5 friends. No, wait, random people on the street, as I assume you've already voiced your disgust to your friends. If even one thinks it's in poor taste, I'll eat it. Gochu-jang and cotten. Mmm mmm good.

I don't know if this is sincere or condescending. Your behaviour toward me in the past has made it hard to judge. I'll assume the former. Thanks.

Mirriam-Webster Unabridged: Humour
Quote:
That quality of the imagination which gives to ideas an incongruous or fantastic turn, and tends to excite laughter or mirth by ludicrous images or representations; a playful fancy; facetiousness.

Funny, even after all this, you remind me of my best friend in Canada. I think things are a lot more intense at a keyboard, but we'd get a long over a beer. If you're in Newfoundland, look me up. I'll be the guy with the kimchi breath.

Who's we?

Are you one of those freaks that feels compelled to make eye contact with and greet the only other foreigner in a sea of Korean faces?

Don't really see myself as a freak corp but yes, I am not Korean nor ever will be, do not defend Korea on this basis. I try to connect through various networks actually to see that my compatriates as well as other english speaking foreigners are alright, it's our kind, I want to know that they are conducting themselves well, and happy. If I can help, I will. Sorry I can't tell you more.

And Newfie, man, I got not beef with you~ I just wish I could have had a pint with you is all. That sounds condesceinding but it isn't, I did as you asked and shoed your teeshirted mugshot to my colleague, Jung-soon, and she thought first of all that you mean no harm by wearing it, you're a pretty nice guy but at the same time she sensed something of the victim in you, that you were hurting yourself before others could hurt you first, Korean people in this case. A little like saying "Hey, I know I'm fat but I am a nice guy." I asked her further "How would you feel if this would become popular with foreigners in Korea?" She said, "It would be disappointing for us." (I state with all my heart that JUng-soon does not have a racist bone in her body, and really relishes the chance to meet someone from another culture, believe me).

I believe your t-shirt will confirm the prejudices of Korean nationalists, whilst at the same time alienate you from progressive, open minded koreans, of which I believe there are many in Seoul, Jung-soon being one of them.

I don't think it is a good idea guys, to bring us down, by emulating this idea for a t-shirt. Humorous and original as it is for an individual to wear. Sincerely.

I was a bit hard on Newfie, but my reaction was the right one. We can carry ourselves with dignity, and pride and be respected, we don't have to mock ourselves to justify ourselves, all we have to do is carry ourselves with pride.

And Newfie, I meant all the good things I said to you, with all I have ~ bon voyage mate.

Been home since July 13th, loving the hell out of it. Korea seems like a distant dream now, like I was never really there.

Anyway, I completely disagree with your point Butterfly, but that's not news, and disagreement's cool anyway.

Thanks for the good wishes. If any of you make it to Nerwfoundland, ask for Dennis.

Take 'er easy.

p.s. No post count? Man, go away and everything changes...

BACK to the original topic!!!

I think the BEST thing to put on a t-shirt would be:

Fine, thank you, and YOU????

Being very new to Korea, I had no idea what the shirt said. I ran an online translator, and I have a feeling the humour may have been lost in the translation. I qute verbatim (from www.worldlingo.com)

Right the bedspread which tries to be pierced like that. That lya it goes out, the foreign nation to Rang. Gesturing mind to ocean Rang. The cowardice does not eat Ji foot instead of at this king strongholdend peeling affection E step show.

Sure, I'd wear a shirt that said that. Shocked
