Just wondering if the women who wouldn't apply for a "whites/Caucasian only" job would use the same principles here. |
Never applied to "females only" jobs.
My gender and race have nothing to do with my ability to do a job.

At my current gig, I was told they'd prefer a man, but they'd interview me anyway. |

That may be true, but I certainly don't carry myself that way at a job interview. |

Isn't balancing the numbers a recognition that it makes a difference whether a man or woman is doing the job, and therefore sexist? |
No, I don't think so, not in this case anyway. |
I see. There is no difference between a woman's and a man's work, but they would just prefer a woman?
What happened to equality? Are women more equal than men? |
I'm not a big debater Phadreus, sorry. If you're looking for equality you may want to seek it and that's just fine with me. In these particular cases the directors obviously had no problem with male teachers or the ratio wouldn't have been as high, male to female to begin with. |

Would you be saying that if you were denied the "GREATEST JOB IN THE WORLD" that you spent years trying to get, and instead it was handed to a girl who had no skills of comparitable value but was hired simply because she was the sole female candidate? I think not. |

I think it takes me more work to send them my resume than it takes for them to delete it.
My time is more valuable than theirs (in my opinion) so no, I don't apply. |

Look folks, I grew up in a time where there was plenty of discrimination against women in the US. There were no recreational sports for girls (What? Girls play Little Leage? No Way!), almost no women elected officials and virtually every senior company official was a man. The women were expected to type the letters, get the coffee, shine the shoes and provide "other services" if you know what I mean.
Korea is still developing its social conscience. The women of THIS generation are going to be the ones that have to fight the male-dominated corporate structure. Hagwons, while generally one-owner run, HAVE changed in the time that I've been here. Sure, some are still asking for "white, female, beautiful, thin 24 year olds", but a majority of them HAVE realized that guys can teach kindy as well (and sometimes better!) than women, and that older teachers can be as effective (and sometimes more so!) than younger ones. When I first came here, there was considerable age discrimination One director even said "Wow, I didn't realize you were so old!...She ended up hiring me and cried when I left!
For those of you ALREADY working in a hagwon that posts this kind of ad, it's up to YOU to gently point out to your boss that maybe the perfect teacher is NOT of the gender, age or race that they have their mind set on. |

Another possibility may be that they have shared housing and don't want to put men and women together, so they are hiring to fill the available bedroom.
Would you apply for a job in this situation? |

Good point! Actually, in one of my first jobs, I lived in a 3 bedroom place with one other girl and a guy. The owner didn't see it as a problem...and neither did we! |

This is a good point. Most employers, in any country, have a good idea of the type of employee they want to hire before interviews even start. Whether its a teacher, bartender or corporate executive, the gender of the potential employee is most often predetermined. The difference is that back home you can't allude to this preference.
I too like the fact that knowing this information beforehand would save me valuable time -- just skip over it and move on. |
