I sold my car. It was financed and I just couldn't see keeping up payments and insurance on a car that I wouldn't be driving for at least a year (especially considering massachusetts insurance for a 22 year old gal like myself with a perfect driving record runs me about $1900 a year).

I only had my own insurance for a year and a half, which is how long I owned my only car to date, so it's not like I've had "continuous coverage" that long anyway.

When/if I'm ever home, I can drive my parents' cars. And my insurance situation will be pretty much the same as anyone else who sells their car and decides not to buy a new one for a while.

I'm from Australia. Last year, while in Korea, I cancelled my auto insurance. Then I went back to Aus. for 6 months and found that I had lost all my "no-claim" bonus and had to start my insurance again on the very expensive basic rate.

This year my car is in storage while I'm in Korea but I've kept the insurance so I won't loose my entitlement to a no-claim bonus.

Incidentally, I've left my house empty because I have had so much trouble with tennants causing damage and not paying the rent. I have kept the insurance on the house - don't want to risk loosing it to a fire or maybe damage by vandals while I'm here in Korea.
