I'm curious about how many of you are in Korea for just a year, then jetting out. How many of you are staying for more than one year, and what made you stay?
I'm about a month from the end of my first contract, and personally I will feel sweet relief when the plane touches down in Vancouver. I know that Korea could be fun for me in some circumstances, but it's been about as boring and isolating as I would expect a year in a foreign country would be. The kids are fun sometimes, but the job is draining. I live in a small town and it's been very trying at times. The compensation is the fat wad of cash that I'm bringing home with me.
I think that spending more than, say, two years in Korea would mean that you have either a great job that you're comfortable with or some significant personal connections. So if that 's the case, what sucked you into another year in Korea? |

Not enough options. I fall in the '6 to 7 years' category. I've been here for about 8 years. The country keeps changing for the better, so I'm in no hurry to relocate just yet. |

I guess a sociology graduate should have done a better job at designing a poll. I can't change the poll options now. But I guess you're closest to the lifer category, Hollywood.
Added another option for you in your poll.

That begs the question: why did you come back for more punishment? |

I'm a lifer, as in I'm not going home anytime soon, but don't know about an ESL lifer. I can see out my first year no probs, about 4.5 months to go. |

Looking at the 3 year game plan, but might need to do 4 to get the loans caught up while enjoying life and all. I'd personally rather be checking out various countries now, but oh well. |

Where's the "Never been, and couldn't even point it out on a map" option. |

7 years and counting.
As another said, the place keeps improving every year.
Also our economic situation is pretty good here and we have a rich family life.
Not moving anytime soon. |

7 years next month. Hated it at first, but yes, the place is geting better (and so am I). Guess you could say I'm a lifer (the name), but discovered that the hard way!!
IMHO, if you stay for more than 2 years, you'll have the devil's own time going back home and restarting your life there. |

I chose 2 years but that's just a guess. I'll have a much better idea a week from now, when I (gulp) arrive in Korea! |
