Jobs are plentiful right now. Just thought I would share this info. I am not going to give the names of the schools, but you can PM me for the names.
Job 1> Teaching adults........2.2mil plus apt. ..........hours 176 per month! (including 2 Saturdays)
Job 2....Teaching adults.....1.6 mil plus apt.......120 hours per month
Job 3.....Teaching adults....2mil.....you pay apt rent plus half of key money.........2min/mth /20hours per week
Job 4......Elementary.......2.3 mil,,,,,,,22 hours per week
Guess which one I took. I am really surprised at some of the long hours. I hope these jobs go begging. If they can't get teachers maybe conditions will improve for all of us.
The people at all these establishments seemed ok, but I question the working conditions. If you want to know the names just PM me.

Just out of curiosity is Job #4 the one you chose? And is it with a public schoool or a hagwon? |

I would have waited and not taken any, since I've been here a while.
The #4 job is virtually identical to the one I accepted as a newbee, however.
The others are all crap. |

Rubbish jobs.
120 hours is already a lot....
176 for 2.2m?!
Hmmn....
My feeling is the Korean (mis)management of these places just feel sure they'll find someone....so they make these daft offers. Chancers all.
Basic conditions here in Japan seem better - splits are rare, basic hours 20-25 a week. More money.
Cost of living is higher though, but only 30-50% higher.
Teacher's I've met here seem to be having a better time. Sure in the long run it can turn sour, but it normally goes wrong in SK within a few weeks/days. All my colleagues at the last place were sick of it....counting the days.
Like a Vietnam war movie/novel.
Best advice for teachers in SK - get qualified and get out of SK. Just use it to save a stash of cash and then leave. Sad for the many kind and sincere students. But there's no place for us there yet...IMO and experience.
In 10 years things will improve...maybe. |

Qualified? Is there really that much competition in Japan for English teaching jobs? How does the competition compare to South Korea? How much money does one need to live in Japan before the first paycheck comes in? I've been focusing on South Korea for the last four months. Japan would be preferable but possibly a dumb move for a first year teacher with not much money. Also, a lot of people have had the experience of teaching in Korea for their first year and then Japan the second year. They really seem to enjoy Japan after Korea. |

Those are the worst jobs ive ever seen. Maybe not number 4, but id rather go sexless for a month than subject myself to any of those offers.

2.0 for teaching adults for 20 hours? That's pretty good for a generic job full-time. Sure, you have to throw down 300,000 for rent, but if one had to work an extra 10 hours per week for free rent it would reduce the average pay per hour.
I'd take that job for the visa and guaranteed income. I would work the four hours a day with no issues, then line up an extra job or two for another four hours a day. End of the day a person has worked eight hours over a ten hour period like a normal job and the take home pay after paying for rent easily clears 4M. That's without even trying.
And that's teaching adults, which most people find easier than teaching children. |

Would you take the legal route? |

Come a long Gord....
The extra job is illegal, and unlikely to fall into a 10 hour period. The 20 hours may already be a split shift.
Surely you know this Gord? How long have you been in Korea?
Yep - teaching adults can be easier. But don't turn round and start saying it's easy. It'll still tire you out, if you make a decent job of it.
Sure, 2m is a living. But it's not a good living, and it doesn't begin to compensate for the hassles of living abroad and coping with hogwan hassles.
Of course, the jobs will be filled by someone sometime.
Supply and demand. |

i'm doing 20 hours a week now... 40 hours on site though..
next job is 2 1/2 hours a day on site and i clear about 1.5 including housing.. with... wait for it... just under 5 months paid vacation.
if it were 20 hours on site (or close enough) and not split shifts, i'd take door number 3.
adults are an easier lesson anyway you look at it.. all are focused, no noise, no being cool in front of others, no crap basically.. |
