Perhaps its the glare, the dirty look, they "hey you are all racist" attitude...could be a number of things...
Can't rule out the smell either...you never know. Perhaps its the bag that is on the empty seat next to you or the sign that says "I am better then you"...
Could be many things....  |

You could ask the Koreans who are avoiding sitting next to you if they are rascist. I think the Korean term in question form is "inchokimnika". That would realy shame them. Especialy the fact that you as a foreigener can throw there shit back in their faces. There are other words for rascisim as well. Just throw the words out at them, and smile. Tell them you are practicing your Korean.
That would humiliate them so bad, and it would be good for them to. let em know that you know what's going in there minds. They try to guard their cultural screwups with a passion, because basically they know deep down that they are a little dysfunctional around any caucasion. The shame of you letting on that you know and understand their idiosyncracies and their weirdness could really tick them off.

Well I do think there is something in what you're saying here Homer, with the sense of Kibun or Nunchi that Korean people depend so heavily on (at times to drive us quite insane due to it's effect on minimizing the need for the spoken word) I think those who are harboring contempt for those around them will experience people not wanting to sit next to them. I thus stand corrected, while I hardly ever experience this, I can concede that there are possibly some who do. |

As for racism you have failed to prove that this is racism though. Unless you are telepathic and moreover are so in Korean, you couldn't possibly tell the difference between racism and just smelling funny. |

That post was not meant to be taken seriously..
Of course some people experience this. Could be for any number of factors and they chose to believe what that factor is. No one can say that their conception of why it happens is faulty at its base.
But, we can discuss other possible factors. |

I ride the subway a long way everyday. I usually have a seat next to me open. A few times some have got up and left, only to go stand. The young women are more "polite" and they will sit next to me. So the effects are either an open seat/more room or a young woman. Um ... thats paradise.  |
