What is the difference between DVD-R DVD+R?
Also currently what is the fastest recording speed available? I don't really see any value in a recorder that is less than 24x speed and would prefer faster. Consider that with my 52x CD-burner it takes just under 3 minutes to burn 700mb but a DVD of 4gb would take more than 15 minutes it is clear that speed is an issue when buying a DVD burner. |

Minor differences in compatibility with ordinary DVD players. Both groups claim theirs works on more players. The distinction between the two is quickly becoming irrelevant as most drives work with both types (DVD+/-RW marked drives).
DVD+R discs seem to be more common, particularly outside Korea. |

Here's a link to a short, very easy to read guide to all DVD disks.
What is DVD?
DVD+r and DVD-r are a bit different. Apparently DVD-r works on more DVD players. I always get DVD-r for movies at Yongsan. Whenever I tell a dealer I want to record movies they give me that. They wave no when I point at other DVD discs.
Reading the boxes one day I found the LG DVD RW (super multi GSA 4081B) to have the fastest write speeds. Faster than the discs can accept. So I got that and I write to LG discs. DVD-r burn at 4X max but LG can write at 8X max.
The link is part of a site that's all about ripping and/or writing to CD and DVD.
Lots of guides and a forum for newbies and more advanced readers. |

I have bought and tried both, because my player plays both, but I prefer the + discs.
My burner doesn't seem to like burning the "-" discs at the higher 4x speed, so I stick to "+". That's just my machine, though. |

Even if you have a recorder that will do 24x (probably within the next 6 months at this rate of progression), it's going to be quite a wait till we have media that can burn that fast which is readily accessible.
Look at the dual layer situation. Dual Layer DVD burners have been out for a few months, but the dual layer media has only been reaching the consumer very recently.

Thanks for the info.. I'll just wait until everything is readily available at the speeds that I want. |

Buy one of the dual-layer machines.
That's my advice. |
