I am curious as to which type of resume works best for work here? I used to swear by a chronological resume, but after tons of substitute teaching work, and several temporary contracts in Canada, I switched to a functional resume. I am wondering about a functional resume's effectiveness over here though? So, what has worked best for you over the years?
I am, most specifically interested in applying for a university position for my next go-around here.
Thanks,

I wouldn't worry about the resume more the photo that goes with it. Keep it concise remember that the person hiring might not have the best grasp of english. |

It all depends on what you can put on the resume. |

I'm just about to update my resume for a fresh job hunt. To be honest, my reume's have been a bit lame in the past. Any hints for a good resume? Layout, information, etc. I always limit it to a page- is that enough do you think? |

For Korea I put my 'Education' first since that's the primary requirement here. BA or BSc only. Next I put my 'Teaching Experience'. I follow these with 'Other Work Experience' and 'Other Education'.
My first resume for here was functional because I had no teaching experience. Followed by 'Work Experience' and 'Other Education'. I do not believe that my resume had any bearing whatsoever on the job I landed. My wife and I were hired by a school run by a married couple approximately our age. That's why they chose us. That and our friendly faces.
Some teaching positions, Universities, public schools and some hogwons, may examine your resume similarily to what you'd expect back home but almost all hogwons are exceptions to this. You'll likely have accepted a position and be on a plane elsewhere if they took the time to follow through a western style hiring process. For them the resume is just a document that immigration wants.
I saw a school director and her manager stare at two fullscreen pictures on the PC for days trying to decide which teacher to hire.
One guy was an experienced, qualified teacher with a full resume. The other guy was none of the above. They chose the other guy because of his face.
The face thing gets said here a lot so I think it's valid.
I chose the combo option from your selection above only because I went through an intensive job hunting seminar in January 2003 back home. They made a strong case for this type and my wife and I got excellent results.
So why did we come back here? |
