Disregard the romanization, if you have an issue. You know what the words mean.
Rule- Short visuals only. One ajumma & ajossi perspective per post.
Ajumma- Squatting on the street in front of her mat full of vegetables.
Ajossi- tacky golf shirts.

Ajumma - riotously bright and conflicting flower-patterned clothes
Ajosshi - sitting at a pojangmacha, drinking and yelling....I was thinking today that this reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Lisa is walking down the street and the two Russians are angrily bellowing at each other, as the subtitles display "Excellent game. Would you like to play another?" or something like that. Ajosshi Korean definitely has an element of that to it. |

If we're talking about general impressions, then my experiences have led me to invoke these characteristics:
ajosshi - self-absorbed arrogant airs, or overbearing self-confidence, take your pick.
ajumma- kind yet irritable, pushy yet helpful. |

I'll go with the "arrogant airs". Arrogance is a bad thing.
Confidence is a good thing.
I like seeing these arrogant guys outside Korea. They may not walk and talk quite so loud and proud as they do in Korea, but many still put on airs of superiority, especially in countries poorer than Korea. It's pathetic. The best is when they struggle to communicate because of their lousy English or other foreign language skills, and that no one speaks Korean!
I get my kicks in pathetic ways sometimes. |
