Sorry if this has been covered, but I haven't been able to get the search function on the forums to work for the last few days.

What's the best/cheapest way to call back to Canada from SK? If phone cards are the way to go, which ones give the best rates.

I usually use a calling card. I get them in Itaewon...the rates depend on whether or not you're using a cell or a landline.

I generally tend to prefer the World Ring card. Can't get it from the lady at the little booth in Itaewon but if you go to the little convenience shop across the street (same side as Steff's Hotdog), they have it.

The Spot Card is pretty good too. You can find it in Itaewon for 12,000-13,000 depending on which shop you go to. It gives you 200 minutes to either the US or Canada from a landline.

It works out to like 5 cents a minute US, which means for me it's cheaper to call home from SK then it was to call from within Alaska last year! Crazy!

I get the Miracle card in Daegu. For the U.S., it comes to about 4.5 cents per minute. Its $12 for 41/2 hours.

My boss this week invited me to use one particular office phone any time I wanted -- apparently its on some kind of unlimited long-distance program. Nice!

If you can figure out a little bit of Korean, try www.ssancard.co.kr
They sell a whole bunch of cards online, and you can do a search for which card is the cheapest for your country calling from/to mobile or landline. You pay online and get the access code by email (and on your mobile to if you want). Check every time when you buy a new card though, because the rates change!

I use TimePlus. It gives you the standard 200 minutes for 12000 won.

i can't remember the name of the best card i found, but it was something like oneshot, or best usa (sorry), but the best thing to do is to go to itawon and ask the shop person as the cards seem to change a lot.

You could try Max card through www.naraphone.co.kr

For 10,000 won you get 4 hours and 19 minutes,
for 20,000 won you get 8 hours and 39 minutes,
for 30,000 won you get 12 hours and 59 minutes, and
for 50,000 won you get 21 hours and 38 minutes.

And that's just for Canada. There are great deals for every country. I use it to call New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

If you don't have a credit card, you could do what I did- one of my Korean teachers would pay for it with her credit card and I would pay her cash.

I think it's a great deal. Certainly better than having to travel all the way to Itaewon just buy a phone card.

Even though it's in Korean, you can proably find your way around. The guys at the service center speak good enough English too and are very helpful.

Don't use it for Canada...use it for Thailand, but the Canada rate looks decent.

The greatest card I've found so far is the "July 4th Card". For 22,000 won you get 600 minutes to the states.

I'm not sure about other countries, but my friend used it to call Norway and said it lasted about 2 1/2 hours. Tegue is a 2 hour trip for me but whenever I or my friends head out that way we always grab a few of these. The only place I know to get them is about four buildings down from one of the US army gates at a small cell phone repair shop Kim's Repair it says in English.

The service provider is ONSE, whatever that means
