True, guy, but this ain't home. You see the same kind of ads in Japan. Here, it ain't "discrimination", just employers being upfront about who they want to hire.

I know you're not a newbie, so why are you so shocked/outraged now?

Some of it is racism, some of it isn't. It sounds more like discrimination to me.

If this isn't "discrimination," then what is "discrimination"? Think before you speak next time! Rolling Eyes

You didn't notice "discrimination" in quotation marks in my post?!

I'm not defending it-I'm just saying that that's the way it is over here & we'll all be long gone before it changes. The fact is, most E. Asian employers see nothing wrong in specifying the type of teacher THEY want & are puzzled/put off by Westerners who decry that practice.

When it came time to hire my replacement for this job, my boss initially had a bit of trouble finding someone "white" enough. He complained that the resumes that the recruiter submitted to him were those of people who looked Asian, some who were fat, etc.

Now Mr. Kim doesn't understand this any better than we do. He would just as soon hire a Kyopo; in fact he thinks it would be better to hire someone who knows something about Korean culture. He's an open-minded guy, but he's also a businessman. If his customers (the parents) are going to be put off by someone who is of Asian descent, overweight, etc. then he's going to just go with the slim, youthful whitie.

Remember that Korea is a very appearance-obsessed society, and this is reflected in the preference for a Nordic-looking white person to teach English to their kiddies. Haven't you seen those "hikers" who put on a 40L backpack and ice picks before they go for a walk in the hills? Appearance is everything here man... don't think we're immune just because of our Western concern for human rights.

Playing the apologist for a minute and reminding y'all that anyone has a right to demand a certain kind of person to fill a certain kind of job.

Of course, I just say that because I'm young, white, female, and hot. But it's still true.

If this kind of thinking were never challenged, Chinese-Canadians would still be slaving in laundries and general stores.... or getting blown up building tunnels for the railroads cuz the white guys wouldn't do it.

Do you eat chicken packaged in the US? Or wear t-shirts or stockings made in the US? Because that kind of thinking still runs rampant in the US and Mexicans will willingly do the work white guys (and black guys) won't do.

Oftentimes because they don't have a greencard or citizenship like most whites and blacks in the U.S. So they get the short end of the stick. That's why there's a movement of sorts to give increased benefits and rights to illegal aliens so they can't be taken advantage of (as much)...

Sorry, you're going to have to be more clear with whatever your point is. I'm not American, and how is it my fault if Mexicans want to do work that white and black guys won't do? Confused

I was referring to the fact that when Chinese immigrants were first accepted in Canada, they were barred from virtually every profession. This is how the Chinese laundries became so prevalent; it was virtually the only line of work available to them.

I guess it wasn't the best analogy; my point is that discrimination on the basis of race, religion, etc. is NOT acceptable and can't just be sloughed off as a person's right to choose who to hire. Human rights can't just be dismissed that easily.
