I like koreans, I really do, and i am generaly accepting of most of their cultural quarks that bother others. but the other day i was seriously grossed beyond my limits.

I was on a train from seoul to taegu. i had not seat and was in the dinner car. i sat at a table with a family of 4 (mom, dad, boy and girl around 4 and 6 or so.) the table was really messy and i cleaned it up. they gave me some crackers and i bought the kids some bannana milk. every thing was going great I was loving the taegu saturi made me feel right at home... i started reading a book and the daughter and father were walking some place on the train and the little boy had to pee. (this is where it gets silly)

kid says he has to pee and mom pulls down his pants and has him piss in a cup IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DINING CAR!!!!

instead of disposing of the cup she places it on the dinner table CLOSER TO MY SIDE OF THE TABLE!!!!

ok.. initial disgust wears off and i susspect maybe she didnt want to leave the table since some one would take it. maybe she is just waiting for pop to come back and take care of the cup of piss.

pop comes back and kid says again "I have to pee"

does daddy take him to the mens room? NO. he takes the cub that i had previously been drinking Ice coffe from and has the kid piss in that. and guess where he puts it? ON THE TABLE RIGHT NEXT TO THE OTHER ONE

OMG OMG i am close to a true cultureal breakdown here. after a time i get napkins and throw the stuff away myself with a polite smile and a few words to keep the disgust off my face.

I like korea.. but who pisses in a cup and leaves it on the table? HONESTLY????

We've discussed this before in other threads (not busting your balls or anything, just saying). Yeah, it is pretty disgusting and something I see on a frequent basis. We had friends over the other night to drink beer and eat chicken; the two-year-old boy had to pee, so his mother turned him around, whipped his shorts down, held out her cup that she had just finished drinking out of, and away he went.

I was like...dude...I love ya but the bathroom is maybe ten steps away.

Well, when I was six, I put a cup full into a visiting aunt's shampoo bottle.

i haven't seen this. The nearest I've come across is mommy letting little johnny pi*s in the middle of the street, with people busilly walking past like its the most natural thing in the world.

Peeing in cups, plastic bottles, sinks, or other receptacles should only be done by the monstrously hungover, or those whose significant other takes waaaaaay to long in the shower.

Maybe they think it's cute. Like 'everything baby does and is is SO cute'. It could be they regard that cup to hold baby's 'precious' fluid. And to hand the cup to your side of the table an honour. It may have been considered a priviliege for you to quaff it, smack your lips for more and say, 'damn, baby, that's some fine baby water!' and congratulate them on the fruit of their loins. Next time I guess.

I haven't seen this but I think it just goes to show that certain feelings - like disgust and embarrassment - are largely culturally determined. In Korea it is socially acceptable for small children to pee in public. Just see the funny side. Isn't travel supposed to broaden the mind?

Had they poured the pee into your soup now, that might have been crossing the line.

The first time I saw a woman breast feeding in public (back home, not here) I felt really embarrassed but not any more.
