Okay, got a new custom built system around a month ago. I paid for 256MB RAM, and I'm pretty sure that that was what was installed.

The new system was fine for a bit and then it started o get sluggish. I ran all the virus scans, and spyware software and fixed a few minor problems, but still no major improvement. After a ton of diagnostic tests, I found out that the computer thinks it only has 128MB of RAM.

Ideas on how this happened, and suggestions on how to fix it more than welcome. ( I know I should just pop the case, and check inside myself, but I hate doing that , especially in a place where dust seems to multiply.)

Open the case (make sure the power's off, of course) and make sure that both (as there are probably only 2) of the ram cards are tightly seated.

Ah I think I heard something about this back in the very distant past - something to do with the BIOS settings not picking up exactly how much RAM is really present or something and that a simple change of settings here or somewhere anyway would sort things out.

... am I barking up the wrong tree? My memory of this is really hazy.

I reseated the RAM, and things got a little hairy. It booted up, and then I got a physical memory dump. I tried to reboot and kept getting 3 short beeps.

I switched the two RAM sticks from one port to the other, and presto- fine.

Should I worry?

If it's fine don't worry.
