Wow - thank you for those detailed instructions, Busajo. I'm going tomorrow morning, without a notarized copy of anything. Wish me luck.
Do you know if I go to the Mapo Office (near World Cup Stadium), will the same services be available there? It seems a little less complicated to find (and closer, too).
Thanks, OP |

I got my Korean driver's license at the Kangnam location, but my international permit at Mapo. It looked to me like the same services are offered there, so you should be OK. You can always check the website and give the location a call to double check. |

YAY! I went to the Mapo Office today (getting there was 99% of the battle, and even that wasn't so bad). Cake. Just showed them my license, passport, and alien registration. No questions. Just filled out a form, got my pictures taken, took a ridiculous "physical" (someone completely blind could pass it), gave some won (15,000 total), and the deal was done.
Now I can drive myself around Jeju next week. Thank you! |

Did you come there with photos , or did they take them for you at the office? |

mapo location was easy and painless. Just take the #361 bus to the end of the route and I think the place is across the street. You can catch the bus in front of Ewha subway station by the pizza hut or just down the road from hyundai dept store in shinchon. |

I got my pictures taken at the office. 5,000 for 4. (Just use the ones in the subway stations -- they're cheaper and the same quality. 3x4 I think)
You can also catch the 361 from Mapo-gu Office station on the 6 (gold) line. (Handy if you live in Itaewon) Just go out exit 1. It will take you straight to the agency. |

Awww, I feel bad now. I should have thrown this one out awhile back . . .
For USA citizens/drivers, living outside of the USA, here is a great deal on an IDL:
http://www.idl-international.com/
Do not get faked/fooled by all the BS on the web. An IDL is a permit/translation attached to your current DL status.
The IDl I got is the U.N. standardized form; he will answer all your questions/concerns directly by e-mail. For those who are out of the States already, but want/need an IDL translation booklet sent abroad, this is the way to do it.
The website isn't that great, but his work/professionalism is. If you are a driver who left home without getting one, this is the best, fastest, cheapest, easiest way to do it, in my opinion. This will also cover you for renting/driving in other countries, as well (as long as they are part of the UN agreement).
This is a booklet; it is best left in your vehicle, and is used in conjunction with your dl. It is NOT a card, and will not fold easily into your pocket or wallet!!!
Regards,
Glen
PS ~ Please take note of the Japan portion!!! |

Went to Kangnam and got a Korean license for 10,000 WON. I am from California. It took about an hour. I did need to go to Immigration to get a stamp in my passport. Since being in Korea I received a new passport and immigration never transferred the visa stamp. Even with the immigratrion inconvenience it went well. |

Got mine at the Kangnam office on Monday. Took about one to two hours, including wait for the license to be printed. Quite easy, although had some problems with the photo. Finally learned that there are two photo places -- use the one upstairs on floor two. They cut the photos for you, and you don't need change, which I was lacking.
Now I have to go to the US Embassy to get some approval papers for a larger motorcycle. Not even sure where to go for that. We'll see. |

There has been some talk about getting a translation/verification of your drivers licence to exchange for your Korean one.
To clear the mud a little... If you have a Canadian or US licence, just take your stuff to the nearest licence office and 1 hour later you are off and away.
If you are from NZ, Oz, then you need to have your licence "embassy certified". I'm not sure about those from the UK. |

I got my license yesterday in Kangam. 2nd floor (no lines). The whole thing only took 90 minutes. (60 was waiting for them to make it, so I went to COEX.) It only cost 10,000 won for the license and eye test. Also, the license is good for 9 years! Rembember to get one before July 1 if you want one because I think a new law goes into effect, and one would have to take a written test. |

Does anyone have any experience with a driver's license from Quebec? It's all in French. Would that cause a problem?
Thanks |

Does anyone know the exact procedure for an American citizen living in Incheon to get a motorcycle license under the new rules?
Thanks in advance. |
