Seoul is not cosmopolitan. Considering Korea does not have large ethnic populations or immigration, how can it be cosmpolitain.
Who the hell came up with these rankings? If Hong Kong is not ranked higher than Beijing, than No Chinese or Japanese cities should be even on the list. Moscow ahead of New York, that is wrong. Moscow should not be on the list and also Teheran. No way New York and London should be in the bottom 5. |

seoul cosmopolitan, HA HA HA HA. Not even close.
Cosmopolitan cities I've visited:
San Francisco
NYC
London
Paris
Hong Kong
Singapore
Bangkok
Dubai is borderline. It'll get there w/in a decade probably
Tel Aviv is more cosmopolitan than Seoul, as is Cairo. |

Um, I merely posted that list of population rankings to make the point that if you're going to talk about about how cosmopolitan Seoul is then you probably should compare it with its peers (Most cities, regardless of size, are going to lose in a match up against NY, London, Paris, LA).
In that respect (i.e. compared with to my largely uninformed guesstimate of what some of those other cities must be like) I think Seoul earns the much coveted "slightly above average but nothing to write home about" award. |

ON BEING COSMOPOLITIAN
i moved from Miami, FL to NYC in 1985, where i lived and/or worked until 2002. i am a 99.9% cosmo-girl. my first visit to Seoul was in 1992. stayed here (a long) 3 months. the difference between the two metropolises was gaping. This is much less the case, circa 2004. i'd say Seoul has a way to go but it is well on its way.
i didn't vote because the language doesn't fit my experience. too black and white. |
