you'd think i'd know the answer to this already - but - when buying a computer here in korea, is it easy to buy it with windows in ENGLISH rather than korean?

every computer i've seen here has windows in korean. a friend told me it's hard to get english. i'm buying a computer next month. anyone want to save me a trip to yongsan by answering this question?

It's easy enough to get an illegal English copy of XP. I also know a few people who have had English Windows installed when they bought their computers.

You can buy an English copy of XP corp. at Yongsan. If you stand with your back to the big outdoor market, cross the street and follow the sidewalk around the curve until you see stairs (or a ramp) heading down. It will be on your right of course. As you decend you will notice that most of the booths are dealing in dvd and cd discs and dvd movies. There's at least one guy down there selling games and XP Korean who has XP English. 150-190 thousand won I think.

Also many posters have said they got xp English installed by the vendor that sold them the PC.

Go to the Technology Forum for lots of advice on this topic.
SP2 may not work yet on copies of XP.

Then go here for instructions on cracking it:
Instructions for using XPProCorp-keyChanger.exe

Then go here for that product and the key viewer prog.
File Depository

You'll have to scroll down to find - XPProCorp-keyChanger.exe.

Others may want to save these links. It get's harder to find every time I search for it. I dl'd the file to test it. You need to right click on it and extract the file with winzip or winrar.

Let me know if you have any problems with that. I think I still have a link for winrar if you need it.

better yet, just save the file to your harddrive so that it is there when you need it. Of course I mean a second drive/partiition or it will be erased when you reinstall windows.

Good point. I have it and many other files including my 'favourites' from IE saved onto two PCs, a RAM disk an old small HDD and a couple old CD-Rs I just can't part with.

Easier just to slipstream the SP2 into your existing WinXP CD, then use a good key.

Saves the hassle of changing keys just for SP2.

This proggie will do it all for you.

Ummmm...I guess is hould preface this by admitting that I'm a technotard, but that I'm trying to embrace my inner geek. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a computer that came with XP pro in korean. A friend then gave me a hacked copy of XP pro in English and the product key.
I installed the English XP over the original operating system. It went well. All good.
About six months later I had some problems that involved having a Korean serviceperson come over and reinstall Windows. He only had a Korean version, so I told him to go ahead, figuring that once he was done I'd reinstall the English XP.

When I tried to reinstall the English XP, I couldn't get through the installation process....it just stopped after I tried to enter the product key. This was some time ago and I can't remember exactly what happened, just that the installation stopped whenever I tried to enter the product key.
So I nguess my questions are:

Does the product key have an expiry date (or something like that) which would allow me to install the English OS once and not a second time?

Since I still have the hacked English XP disc, can I use the links that dalton provided above to get a product key that will let me install the English OS again ?

I hope my question adequately reflects my ignorance.

Cheers,
Pink

Sounds like you need a new product key, and the links that Dalton posted should have some.

On a side note, I installed SP2 over the weekend, and my illegal product key worked fine. Cool
