Also can anybody help me out with a link for Tourist visas. I have visited the Korean Consulate of Vancouver's website and i'm a little confused;
Here's what it says:
"b. No-Visa Entry
The following Nationals who want to visit Korea just for a short-term tour or transit are permitted to enter Korea with no visa according to the principles of reciprocity or priority of national interests with a tourist/transit visa status(B-2, 30days). Special status is awarded to Canadians(6 months) and Australian(90days)"
and
"2. Nationals of those countries which have visa waiver agreement with Korea can enter without visas, on the condition that they should not engage in remunerative activities during their stay in Korea.
 Canadians can also enter the Republic of Korea without visas for a stay of up to six months."
I'm a Canadian, so does this mean that I can fly to Seoul from Vancouver without any visa? Do I need a return ticket, or can it be a one way?
Sorry, i'm still a newby to this whole international travel thing and I am a little confused |

| What's going on with these 10-8pm job offers lately. Is that just split-shift in disguise? Seems like every job out there nowadays is 8 classes/day and they only want females. I'm getting ready to sell umbrellas on the trains. |

Any Canadian can land with a return ticket and get a 6 month tourist visa.
You are just a tourist.
10-8
Economy is a bit rough. Child care AKA KG has always been a money maker here. Last I heard KG parents pay more than the others. Try to find a school where a KT is in the KG class with you. Perhaps even teaching it with you as the AT.
AT= assisitant teacher.
KT= Korean teacher.
KG= kindergarten.
AKA= also known as.
Burned out= too many KG classes (with out a KT) in a split schedule with elementary and middle school students. |

Heyo,
I've got a complaint about finding a job! I came here through a recruiter and regret it fully. I'm not happy with my school and I've found out the hard way that using a recruiter saves you the airfare (sure mine was 1100$ CnD) but that in dealing with any problems relating to my contract and job the recruiter was 100% on the side of the (paying) Hagwan. I'm a newbie over here myself but I'm pretty sure in the last three months I could have made my airfare back in privates if my hagwan hours were not so bad.
Now, My problem with finding a new job is that I'm currently in a job i don't like, I have to pay back the airfare and do the running around with very little money trying to find a job. But wait what's the problem you ask? THere are so many jobs I shouldn'y have a problem right? Well, THere ARE so many jobs. THere are too MANY jobs! Sometimes the the same job advertised by different recruiters (embarassing).
I'm having trouble picking "that perfect job" Does it exist? I distrust recruiters so much that when i see a really good job I figure it doesn't even exist and that those bastards are just going to tell me I don't have enough experience and offer me the job I'm just leaving!
Anyhoo, Just venting a little. hehe. I'm going to Pusan this weekend to try my hand at this door to door job searching stuff. I feel pretty clueless though. I let you know how it goes. |

Just concentrate on what you want (besides "boss that isn't cheating scum"). For me it was a job in a good bit of Seoul with no split shifts. I had to reject about a dozen jobs before I got the kind of job I wanted.
Also always remember that a good schedule is always better than good pay. If you want money do privates. |

Here's some links for you. Don't worry about the perfect job. At this time a job with KG may be necessary. Maybe the school offers lots of support in the classroom including a curriculum. You may have to do paperwork. Supervise lunch while eating. This is not terrible. I've met lots of people here who love that stuff. That is their perfect job.
Use your instincts and try to get into a place with a good environment. Maybe other foreigners that you can party with or just get some support from. I like being the only teacher because they really need you but then I'm married.
Here are useful links about Korea generally and teaching English.
Koreabridge Has links to websites for some cities in Korea including Pusanweb with job links in Pusan.
EFL Law Has contract advice but remember that Koreans respect verbal agreements way more than written contracts. Other links.
Hogwon.com has a page with a huge number of links to job boards.
Korea Links
Korea.com
I think the following blacklist links are useful in an unobvious way. They can help you gain some insight and hopefully get some perspective about jobs here. If they make you paranoid stop reading them because you're getting the wrong message.
Here are three links to blacklists. The last one isn't updated any more.
The Hogwon Blacklist
Jon's ESL Page
The Greylist
These links are for Seoul people who don't have them.
And two great links to maps for Seoul:
Map of Seoul including subway stations:
Seoul Map
Seoul Subway Map
Good luck. There are a lot of jobs. Always check the schedule. Post here if you're unsure. If you're paid on time and the boss treats you with respect then you're half way to the perfect job. Don't sweat the smalll stuff. |
